About us
Hi everyone,
My last name is Dones and as most "Dones" last name owner's know is not a common surname. I started this project because I'm interested to see if we can discover the roots of the name through our DNA data. I have a suspicion that the name has changes phonetically through the centuries so it is most likely that it might be why is difficult to trace. My Dones Family is from Patillas, Puerto Rico. If you been to this town this last name is super common so chances are we are all cousins in some way. Looking at my own family, I discovered that some of my family members were registered as Donis (with an "i") when they were born but Dones (with an "e") under their death certificate. This name is common to in the Philippines. Something that both places have in common (Puerto Rico and the Philippines) is that they were both conquered by Spaniard at one point. It is most likely that this then could be the origin. I also read a while ago that there is an island of the coast of Spain that has been fought by spaniards, french, and other european countries. One of the french cavaliers was Doni or something similar, I would have to find the reference again. This is apparently the only location within Spain that the name surfaces during the early times, and therefore would have come from French ancestry. There is also a reference in Italy and in Britain. Either way, if you have the last name Dones, like me, you are flabbergasted on the origin and this is why I wanted to do this study. Feel free to join share stories and discuss as a group and most likely as distant "cousins".
