Established March 13, 2008 There are many many DeWitts in the United States, and all around the world. We are looking for DeWitts that can trace their lineage back by paper and those that can't. Three major DeWitts in the USA are descendants of Tjerck DeWitt of Kingston, NY, Pieter Jans of Long Island, NY, and Jacob DeWitt. There are no doubt many more. Through this project we have also discovered a large group of modern day DeWitts who are descendants of Witt ancestors who changed their last name in the 1700-1800s to DeWitt. They descend from John Witt (1612-1675) from Lynn, Massachusetts. We encourage participation by males who have tested their Y chromosome DNA. This is not a group that focuses on mitochondrial DNA.
