FAQ
How can I support this project?
- Submit a Y-DNA test if you think you are a direct biological male descendant of a male with the surname of Dayton or one of its variants.
- Encourage others to submit a sample if they meet the above criteria.
- Add your Dayton ancestors to the WikiTree or help others with that task.
- Donate funds to purchase Y-DNA tests for identified candidates who cannot afford them.
How can I know if I am a direct male descendant of Ralph?
For the purposes of Y-DNA testing, you may be a direct biological descendant of Ralph if:
- You are a male
- Your last name is Dayton (or a variant such as Deighton)
- You have a family tree that shows you descended from Ralph or from the Dayton’s who were originally from Long Island, New York.
What if my if my surname is Dayton, but I don’t think I am a descendant of Ralph?
Please join the project. Your DNA may help us identify Ralph’s ancestors, or we may be able to help you find your connection to Ralph.
What if my surname is not Dayton?
You are still encouraged to take a Y-DNA test since adoptions, adoptions and other non-paternal events can cause surname changes. If it turns out that you are not related to Ralph, there are several other surname projects you can join at FamilyTreeDNA.
Which Y-DNA test should I take?
The Y-37 test is the least expensive and will provide a list of matches, but may provide less conclusive results. The Y-111 test is much more precise but at twice the price. The Big-Y test offers the highest level of precision and a refined Haplogroup which will be continually updated as the Y-DNA database expands.
The Big-Y test is the most useful for this project, but you may want to start with a less expensive test to see if you are part of the extended Dayton family and then upgrade later if you want more precise information. Family Tree DNA will store your DNA sample and you can upgrade the test later for a prorated cost.
Please email the Dayton Group Administrator if you have further questions about which test to order.
