About us

The Crerar DNA project aims to connect Crerar/Crarer/Crearer/McIntosh families using DNA. It’s open to any Crerar/Crarer/Crearer/McIntosh/etc. descendants who have taken a Y-DNA or autosomal test. The Crerars are a sept of the Clan Mackintosh from Breadalbane, Perthshire, Scotland. It is said that a McIntosh from Monzievaird, on the run from justice, fled over the mountains to Acharn on the south shore of Loch Tay. He took refuge in a mill, where the quick-witted miller disguised him with flour and a sieve. When his pursuers arrived, they only saw a millworker sifting flour, and left without incident. McIntosh had escaped. From then onwards, he was known as “An Criathrar” (“The Sifter”). The first known Crerar, John McCrerar Kendichroye, was pardoned in 1530. Five hundred years later, Crerars can be found all over the world. As late as the 1870s, many people used the names Crerar and McIntosh interchangeably. Several families switched to McIntosh permanently, especially when emigrating. Y-DNA shows the links between these McIntosh and Crerar families. However, Y-DNA also indicates that the Crerars don’t match any other branch of the Mackintosh clan, and that many of their closest genetic relatives are found in southwestern Scotland and Northern Ireland. As more Crerars test, more information about the family’s history will be revealed. We also recommend joining the McIntosh DNA Project, the I-M223 DNA Project (if applicable), and the "Crerar Family" Facebook group.
