About us

The County of Louth DNA project was created in September 2018. It's principal aim is to provide a forum for persons with ancestry from the county of Louth in Ireland to share genealogical information and collaborate together, were DNA testing suggests a possible relationship.

Louth is the smallest county in Ireland and is situated in the North East of the island. It has had a varied genetic history with many inward migrations over the centuries. In addition to the ancient Gaelic people, Louth has seen Viking, Norman, Scottish, English and other Europeans settle in the past while recent times has seen migrations from all over the World. As a result, it is not unusual for those with Louth connections to have quite a varied ancestry and diversity of associated surnames.

The project is primarily an autosomal DNA project and is open to anybody who has taken a Familyfinder test with FamilytreeDNA and have ancestral links to County Louth. Persons who have taken an autosomal test elsewhere, may be eligible for a free transfer of their data to the Familyfinder database, and so would be able to join the project.

Members are encouraged to add a family tree to their profile. This can help DNA matches to pinpoint potential family connections. In addition to family trees, members can list their family surnames on their profile and also give a location for each surname. It's a good idea to be as specific as possible with the location, using townland, village or town.

A useful was for members to pinpoint matches within the project is to go to the "Advanced matches" tool. On this page, click the Familyfinder box and also from the "show matches for" drop down box select County of Louth DNA project. This will give a list of DNA matches from the group and so should help members reconnect with relatives.

The Activity feed can be used to ask questions and provides an arena for discussion and chat.

The project is relatively new and so membership may take a while to grow and develop. It is hoped that the project will provide another tool for members to try and further research their Louth ancestry. Prospective members are encouraged to contact the administrators for advice, if needed.
