William Coolen was likely born in Newfoundland and arrived with his family in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1762. He married Dorothea Ingram, d/o Charles Ingram and lived for some period of time on the land of Charles Ingram at St. Margaret's Bay, Nova Scotia. He eventually settled at Shad Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada. He had 10 children: Catherine (1777), Charles (1781), William Spry (1782), John (1784), Catherine (1786),William Frederick (1789), Elizabeth Mary (1792), Charlotte Venetia (1795), James (1797) and Mary (1802). It was often felt, in early years, that Joseph was related to a family by the surname COULON that immigrated to Halifax and settled in Lunenburg in the 1750s, however, it has subsequently been shown that the COULON or COLON family emigrated further to Staten Island, New York by 1760.
