About us

This surname project was formed after 10/2006 by Dr. Don Cohagan, who passed away 2017. It includes at least 3 unrelated genetic lineage families carrying the surname of Geoghegan or one of that surname's variants.
So many surnames were revealed by DNA to be of unrelated origins, making pedigrees confusing, and with the challenge of adoption of European standard privacy rules as well, projects were abandoned.

Dave Cushing became admin of this project 10/28/2024. My primary interest is the Uí Maine Galway lineage of Geoghegan, secondarily the full south half of Ireland, with a genuine encompassing interest in this surname and its variants in the entirety of Ireland, Scotland, and their whole diaspora all over the world. I co-administer the FTDNA Tribes of Uí Maine geographic project; formed summer 2024, as well as multiple surname projects. My personal Irish pedigree loses documentation about 1800, but considering the exponential nature of ancestry, doubling mathematically every generation; the 45 generations since average Irish surname adoption about 900 AD adds up to it being very likely that an Irish pedigree includes surname Geoghegan, despite insufficient records before about 1825.

FTDNA's 2024 advanced SNP for FamilyFinder Autosomal Testers yielded three advanced results for test-takers who are not in the primary  project, two legacy project-only members have Big Y results, and ten other men have advanced matches that place them in meaningful Early Medieval Y lineage categories that enrich and flesh out our picture of greater  family organization and history.
