About us

Welcome to the Choate DNA Project.

I am Deborah Moon, the Choate DNA Project Administrator.  I have been involved in genealogy for many years.  When I "discovered" DNA for genealogy, I was hooked and have tested many family and non-family members. However, locating a common ancestor with other testers can be quite a challenging task. One of the objectives of the Choate DNA Project is to identify the numerous male Choate family groups, as well as identifying others (male and female) who have matches with the Choate surname and share segments with a Choate.

Another goal of the Choate Project is to identify and verify the various Choate lineages. In order to help meet this goal, each member needs to complete the Family Tree section for each kit they manage. This goal will also require the cooperation of members to provide the Project Administrator(s) with all source documentation and family records that substantiate their Choate lineage for each birth, death & marriage.

Privacy is extremely important, so posting any dates and locations for living persons on this site is highly restricted (see Code of Conduct). In order to minimize errors, it is very important that we post genealogical data that has good documentation. If you share data that is speculative, please clearly state so.

For those wanting to join the Choate DNA Project please read the following

Both men and women who have taken the Family Finder (autosomal) test are welcome to join if they have Choate/Shoate matches and/or if they have a known Choate/Shoate lineage, but tools are limited at the project level for Family Finder.

For male Choates, or other name if there was a name change or if Choate paternity is suspected, no less than a 37 Y-DNA marker test is recommended as this puts the matching within a good genealogical time-frame. However, for better matching results, please consider the Y-67 or 111 tests. Please note it is imperative that you set your Most Distant Direct Paternal Ancestor with name, some time frame and some geography in your account. You can access this configuration setting from your My Account tab.

****When you submit your Join Request, please provide your Choate lineage from the oldest PROVEN (if speculative, please indicate) Choate to yourself in the format below. Please include all the detail for dates, locations (including the town or community and the county, if known) and spouses names.****

If male, and if you are unsure how you connect to the Choate line but you have Choate Ydna matches, please provide your surname lineage for now.

Please follow this format -

1. SPECULATIVE - John R. Choate b. BET 1771-1780 per 1840 census in unknown but possibly Georgia, Virginia, Tennessee or South Carolina; d. AFT 1840 & BEF OCT 1850 census in possibly Arkansas, Texas or California

Once this information is received, you will be able to join. However, do not be discouraged if you do not have this much information - just include what you do know.

I am available to assist you with any questions or comments you may have about your test, so please don't hesitate to email me at ftdnaprojects@gmail.com.  If I am unable to answer your questions or concern, I will find someone who can.

Again, welcome to the Choate DNA Project.
