About us

As of 11-30-05 we have fourteen participants in the DNA testing. (3 are at the lab.) Eleven match exactly on the 12 marker test, which means that we are all descended from a common ancestor....somewhere back in time.
There are 5 participants that are descended from John Cartmill (Chester Co. PA 1712) through his son Thomas Cartmill. These are Phil, Lawrence William, Earl, Erastus, and Marshall, based on our paper research. I have expanded my test to 37 markers to provide a baseline to John.
Thomas Oliver and Ron are descended from Thomas Cartmill and Nancy Cumpton (1767 in WVA), and our records search indicates that this line descends from Henry (Chester Co. PA 1716). They have both expanded their tests to 37 markers to assist in determining which line they belong to.
Mike Cartmill is our only direct known link to Henry, and his test has been expanded to 37 markers to provide a baseline for Henry descendants. Based on Mike's expanded test and using the time calculator on FTDNA, I have a genetic distance from Mike of 3, or only a 70% probability of our having a common ancestor in the last 300 years (or 1700). Ron and Thomas Oliver have a genetic distance of 1 to Mike which indicates a probability of 97% that they have the same ancestor within the last 300 years. This would indicate that Ron and Thomas are descended from Henry, as well as any other descendant of Thomas Cartmill (1767) and Nancy Compton.
Larry Wayne Cartmill has also expanded to 37 markers to assist in finding his link to one of the Cartmill/Cartmell branches in the mid-1800’s in Missouri. Larry's test indicates that he is has genetic distance of 4 from Mike, which would mean that he is not likely to have descended from the Henry line.
Of course, we have John Cartmill of Glasgow, Scotland who also matches our group at the 12 marker level. As we gather more data, we may ask to expand his test also to 37 markers.
Our most recent results were from Nathaniel Cartmell, who (obviously) is descended from Nathaniel Cartmell (New Castle Co. DE 1685). He also matched all of our participants at the 12 marker level, which indicates that we all are descended from a common ancestor, but the ancestor is probably not as far back in time as we originally thought.
We have two new participants, Donald Cartmell and Wm Patrick Cartmel who have submitted tests to the lab. Those results won’t be in for a few weeks.
