About us

A significant historic discovery at site of the Revolutionary War's Battle of Camden was announced in November, 2022. Archaeologists with the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology, overseen by the Richland County Coroner’s Office, respectfully excavated the remains of 14 Battle of Camden casualties whose shallow battlefield burials were being exposed to the elements and relic hunting. FHD Forensics has joined this groundbreaking multi-agency collaboration underwritten by Historic Camden in order to learn more about these patriots in what are believed to be the oldest unknown subject (John Doe) identifications in the country. The ancient DNA of these brave men has provided complete 245 year old autosomal profiles, as well as yDNA and mtDNA data. The work to trace pre-Revolutionary era families in order to map their descendants and relatives to learn as much as we can about who these soldiers were is underway. Current military historical information has us focused on the Maryland and Delaware regiments, as well as Hal Dixon's North Carolina militia. These are the only units known to have stayed and fought when thousands fled the battlefield. The project seeks to reunite families whose loved ones were never accounted for after this battle. It was their sacrifice that allowed our forefathers to continue the mission of winning independence for America. We need your help to give these ultimate heroes back their names. We will be Y-DNA testing men from certain families with proven genetic ties. Anyone with colonial era ancestors from Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina, and South Carolina is invited to join the project. Locations of focus currently include Anne Arundel County, Maryland; Baltimore, Maryland; Augusta County, Virginia; Staunton, Virginia; County Tyrone, Ireland; and Camden, South Carolina. Surnames include: Allen, Bosley (MD), Bray (VA/TN/MD), Browne (MD), Cheney (MD), Davidge (MD), Fleming, Griffith (MD), McKie/Mackie/McKee, Nickell/Nichol (KY/VA/MD), Phelps (MD), Poage, Pumphrey (MD), Ridgley (MD), Strong, Soward/Seward (MD), Warfield (MD), Welsh (MD), Wilson (VA/KY/MD), and others.
