About us

CALVER is thought to be a locational name, one which comes from the village of that name in Derbyshire (one purpose of my project is to critically investigate that theory, as the name was almost exclusively found in Suffolk and Norfolk). The name is derived from 'calf' and 'ofer', meaning a small hill on which calves are grazed. The name is sometimes misspelled as Carver in early records (because that's how Calver was pronounced in Suffolk and Norfolk), but there are not really any variants.
