About us
CALVER is thought to be a locational name, one which comes from the village of that name in Derbyshire (one aim of this project is to critically investigate that theory, as by 1800 the name was almost exclusively found in Suffolk and Norfolk). The name is derived from 'calf' and 'ofer', meaning a small hill on which calves are grazed. The name is sometimes misspelled as Carver in early records (because that's how Calver was pronounced in Suffolk and Norfolk), but there are not really any variants. However we have had matches with some Culvers, even though that surname has a different origin - this indicates a change in spelling, possibly on arrival in the USA.
