Cable, Cabel, Capel, Capell, Capewell yDNA Project
Capell, and variants can be found in most European countries. These surnames will often mutate into each other or they are confused with each other. For example, people with the surname Capel or Capell living in Northamptonshire, England, when they move to the Birmingham, Warwickshire, area, are proven to mutated into Capewell or Capwell.
The German surname Cabel or Kabel is often spelled with a "C", "G", or "K", and when these Germans immigrate to America their surnames will mutate into Cable or Capell too. Of course, the consonants "b" and "p" are used interchangeably. One Cable/Cabel family in Eastern Tennessee is thought to originate with a German Hessian surnamed Göbel or Göbell; however, this has not yet been proven.
The origins of the surnames are different, but because they sound similar, they are often confused and became the same surname.
