About us

There are three main objectives of our project. One is to identify a group of related individuals: to confirm whether or not those of us who have found each other through surname searches are related, to identify others who are related regardless of surname, and to learn more about the family's Sephardic and Arabic ancestry.

The second goal is to trace the ancestral migration routes from the Middle East to Italy and Spain and to various parts of the world, including Eastern, Central and Western Europe, North, Central and South America, and elsewhere.

The third goal is to identify the Abrahamic tribe from which this paternal line descended.

One branch of this paternal line had a common Sephardic ancestor in Spain sometime before the expulsion in 1492. The surname of that common ancestor may or may not be one of the project member surnames. Some of the descendants of this common ancestor converted to Christianity during the Inquisition (conversos) and some converted but practiced Judaism in secret (crypto-Jews). Others left Spain without converting to Christianity. We have identified descendants of this Sephardic ancestor today in the US, Canada, Britain, Mexico and Spain.

The goal is to link members of the project to a chain of genetic relationships beginning 3,000 years ago in northern Iraq or western Iran and continuing to thirteenth century Italy to fifteenth century Spain, leading out along various migration routes over the next 500 years, taking us to the present. Anyone in Y-DNA haplogroup J1c3d who is a 34/37 or 61/67 marker match to anyone else in the project or who has tested positive for the YSC0000076 SNP is invited to become a member.
