About us

Bolch is a German name (meaning dried fish) and is pronounced like Bolix, where the -ix sounds is close to the German "ich" ("I" in English). When the family moved to America, some kept the spelling but changed the pronunciation to a soft-ch sound like the English, some kept the pronunciation, but changed the spelling. So we are called Bolch, Bolick, Boliek, and Bolich, and Boulch. Currently, all of us descend from a Johan Adam Bolch that settled in Western North Carolina. A historian also asserts that another member of the Bolch family that immigrated with Johan Adam Bolch settled elsewhere in America and called himself Balch. There is a Balch Group already, but they are of a very different haplogroup, and emigrated from England, not Germany. Be sure to check the Balch Group also.
