About us

The goal of the BIRNBACH Surname Project is to distinguish between BIRNBACH/BURNBACH ancestral lines, worldwide. Any reasonable spelling variant is included (please feel free to suggest a variant you feel I have missed).

The primary goal of this project is to develop a Y-DNA database of family members that will provide scientific evidence for male kinship identification.

The project has a focus on surnames: Birnbach (and variations) and aims to place participant test results in context through the following objectives:

(a) Identify the Y-chromosome signature of each test taker and group it where possible according the FTDNA Y-chromosome Haplotree https://www.familytreedna.com/public/y-dna-haplotree/A     

      A first goal in genetic genealogy is to discover your haplogroup in general, and your Terminal SNP, in particular.

(b) Through (a), help test-takers establish the likeliest location where their earliest ancestors would have lived.

(c) Through (a), help test-takers establish how they are connected to other test takers using both genealogical and DNA evidence.

(d) Through (a), investigate the origin of each lineage, its distribution and association with surnames.
