About us
The Battenfeld Surname Project began in October 2005 in order to determine the genetic links between those with the Battenfeld surname or variations such as Battenfield, Bottenfeld, Bottenfield, and Porterfield.
The earliest documentation of the Battenfeld name was made in 778, referring to a battle in that year between the Franks and the Saxons. The battle took place in the area near the town of Battenfeld which still exists in the district of Allendorf in Hesse, Germany.
There is also evidence that the original surname was "von Battenfeld" which normally designates German nobility. This appears to have been dropped, for one reason or another, sometime in the 1500s.
Haplogroup testing has placed the Battenfeld line into the subclade I1c, "The I1c lineage likely has its roots in northern France. Today it is found most frequently within Viking / Scandinavian populations in Northwest Europe and extends at low frequencies into Central and Eastern Europe."
If you were a participant of the National Geographic Genographic DNA Project and have already been tested you are welcome to join!
