About us
Bartalos as a family name first appeared in the second half of the 15th century in at least two geographic areas of Hungary. Of these the more extensively researched - and the subject of the present project - is the branch that arose in Western Hungary in an area located approximately 60 km (abt. 40 mi.) southeast of present day Bratislava (known also as Pozsony and Pressburg), in Slovakia.
When surname usage was becoming common in Hungary one member of a noble clan assumed the name Bartalos, meaning the younger son of Bartholomew in medieval Hungarian. We, the descendants of this individual are studying the history of this branch both after it assumed independent identification and before that. Archival records locate the clan, called Mog, from the late 1100s to their settlement variously called during the centuries as Mogh, Mod and Mad. This settlement still exists today with several Bartalos families among its residents.
