FAQ

1.How is Grouping Done: The intent of Y Subgroups is to align members with a similar set of Y DNA markers so they can determine if they have a common ancestor.
The criteria used to allocate you to a group  is based on the group of your closest matches and
the frequency of matches in that group. Consequently, some members may have been moved to a new group. Members are advised to not restrict their comparisons to just the group they are in as matches do exist in the other groups.

Those  who remain ungrouped continuously, did not match to any other members according to FTDNA's limit on Genetic Distances as follows:

  • Y-DNA12: 3
  •  Y-DNA25: 5
  • Y-DNA37: 7
  •  Y-DNA67: 25
  • Y-DNA111: 40
So, if one who took only a Y12 test and had no matches less than a Genetic Distance of 3 would be ungrouped. Moving to a Y25 or higher test opens up a greater likelihood of matching to other members.

2. Origins of Most Common Subgroup R1b-M269

R1b-M269 (old R1b1a2) is by far the most frequent subgroup today, more than half of Western European and (due to the colonization) American males belong to this line, including over 99% of the R1b project members. It is thought to have originated most likely in Anatolia around 8000 years ago(6500-8500 years with confidence). It had a gradual expansion from the Middle East/Anatolia into Europe through the Balkans and the Danube Valley. In its M269* (M269+ L23-) form, it is found rarely around the Mediterranean, Anatolia, the Balkans.
