The Atwater Surname Project has three major objectives: 1. to find common heritage through sharing of information and DNA testing, 2. to test the hypothesis that most Atwaters/Attwaters in the US are descendants of David Attwater who left England in 1637 and settled in what was termed for many years, the colony of New Haven (CT), 3. to determine the relationship between the 'northern' Atwaters and Moses Atwater(d. 1836, bur. in Chatham Co., NC), who is considered the 'Father of the Southern Branch.'
