About us

The Askew Family Project is open to all who are interested in working together to find their common heritage through shared information and DNA testing. All variant spellings are welcome. If your Surname is missing and should be included, we'll be glad to add it. In England the earliest Askews, under a variety of spellings, appear in the Yorkshire area. Surnames include Asycough, Asquith, Askwith, and Askew. In North Yorkshire is a small village named Aiskew. In the Domesday Book (1086 AD), the place was known as Echescol, which is from the Norse words Eik (oak) and Skogr (wood). There is another village named Askwith as well as another named Austwick. In the 1841 census for England, the heaviest concentration of Askews and Asquiths was in Yorkshire, with 980 individuals born and living in Yorkshire. Next is Lancashire with 305 individuals. The total Askews (with various spellings) is 5888, and Asquiths 2890 for all of England. In our project the most numerous matching Askews are part of the I-M223 haplogroup. This haplogroup dates back some 14,000 years in Europe, and were among the first settlers in Scandanavia, Britain, and Ireland.
