About us

Welcome to the Agnew Surname Project! The surname includes many variants, including the prominent Agnew and Agney surnames, as well as Agne, Anagnostopoulis, D'Agneau, Dagneau, Egnew, Ignew, O'Gneeve, O'Gnimh, O'Gnive, and likely others. These surnames generally have genealogically recent ancestors from Scotland and Ireland, with some potentially tracing further back to roots in Germany or Normandy.

This Project is focused on analysis of the male Y-chromosome through either Y-STR testing (Y-37 through Y-111) and/or Y-SNP testing (Big Y-700). We recommend beginning with a Y-37 or Y-67 test to determine which major haplogroup you belong to, and upgrading to the Big Y-700 as soon as possible to determine which specific branch you match with. Please note that in order to participate in this project, the Y-DNA test participant must ALWAYS be a MALE who either (1) descends in an unbroken male-to-male line from an AGNEW male ancestor or (2) has reason to believe he descends from such an ancestor.

If you have any questions regarding your DNA tests or results, please do not hesitate to contact me. Please include your kit number with your request.
