About us

The hope of this project is to better understand the origins of the Advincula and the Pastrana surnames. These two surnames share the same unique J2a4d haplogroup which is of Mediterranean origin.  The two ancestors of these surnames may have been brothers or cousins about 450 years ago and may have been part of the early Spanish expedition to the Philippines. These two families are located in Kalibo, Aklan, Philippines. Aklan is one of four provinces in Panay Island located in the western part of the Visayas. The Spaniards first landed in Panay in 1569 and left for Manila six months later on May 1570 and conquered the city for the kingdom of Spain. They made settlements in Panay a year later.

Before 1849, most Filipinos did not use surnames. The Spanish Governor-General at that time, Don Narciso Claveria, issued a decree on 21 November 1849 that all Filipinos must have surnames. Natives of Spanish, indigenous or Chinese origins that already have a surname may retain it and pass it on to their descendants. The Advincula and the Pastrana surnames predate the Claveria decree.

It is our hope to find common ancestry with those from other islands in the Philippines and other countries.  This a request to all descendants of the Advincula and the Pastrana surnames who came from Capiz, Iloilo, Negros, Cebu, Leyte, Samar, Cavite, Ilocos Sur and any part of Philippines or those from Spain, Mexico, Columbia, Peru and other parts of the Americas, to have the male descendant tested for the Y-DNA and join our project
