The AXAC LaHAXE HAUIZ Family Project is open to all who are interested in working together to find their common heritage through sharing of information and dna testing. All variant spellings are welcome.
Asciak/Axiak/Axiaq and Agius/Aguis families tests to date point to a common ancestor before the creation of the family surnames some 900 years ago.
This project is also interested in the Agius Family as well as families from Spain, Portugal, France, Luxemburg, Germany, Austria and Italy/Sicily that share any of the names listed.
Ydna testing and matches found to date point to a Frankish or Gaul/Celtic Origin of the Paternal Line.
Abela in his Malta Illustrata (1647) gave an interesting list of distinguished Maltese families who owed their origin to the Normans.
From Francesco Abela description of Malta written 1654 he places the arrival of "Axac" around this time 1283 -1296 and he is also noted as being the Captain of the Sons of Sicily (Biskallin - Sons of Sicily) who landed in Malta via the inlet known today as Marsaxlokk, previously Mars SiKalli, Port of the Sicilians.
In terms of a possible Norman connection we see in France today surname spelling such as Achache, Achaque as well in North France we have the village of ASCQ, which this name was noted in a transaction record to the Church in Catania, Sicily.
We also have the villages in South France being Acac, Assac, Axat and Ajac which was part of the Catalan region during the Arognese period.
The surname Ecia is has been found in the records of Navarre Heraldry from the 14th centuray AD
We also find records of AGUIS in the heraldry records from Gallacia, North West Spain from the 14th century AD.
60km North of Valencia, Spain we find the a hamlet called Aigus.
The Kingdom of Navarre had a relationship with Kingdom of Sicily under the Norman rule of King William (II)who was married to Margaret of Navarre in the 12th century. In this period we see a number of Noble families from the Navarre region migrate to Sicily such as La Barba.
The AXAC paternal line from early 1300's to 1598, all married wives who themselves have ancestry from Navarre, Catalan, Aragon, Castile which places the Axac family as one of the Mdina, Malta, Noble families of Spanish heritage.
