Description
All males named Guittard, Guitard, Guitar, Guitart, Guittar, Guiter, Guitter, Quittard, Gathard, and similar spellings in France, America, Britain, Spain, Andorra, Portugal, and around the world, are cordially invited to take the Y-DNA test and join this Guittard Family History Y-DNA Study. Female Guittard descendants and other male Guittard descendants not having the Guittard surname can easily participate and advance the Study by recruiting their Guittard-surname father, brother, uncle, cousin, nephew, etc., to take the test representing their common Guittard line. They can also take the Family Finder test.
NOTE: THE GUITTARD STUDY HAS FUNDS AVAILABLE FROM TIME TO TIME TO CONTRIBUTE TOWARD TESTING COSTS FOR A GUITTARD LINE NOT PREVIOUSLY TESTED and for special lines where a confirming test is being sought. PLEASE INQUIRE IF THE CONTRIBUTION FUNDS ARE AVAILABLE FOR A TEST ON YOUR LINE.
We recommend the Y-DNA test be at least 37 markers. The more markers, the better the bang for the buck. The 12 marker test is fine for determining the haplogroup and for showing whether the tester might be related to another tester, but not how close the relationship is. The 12m is too general to be very useful in genealogical dna tracing, and typically needs to be upgraded to at least 25 or 37 in order to avoid false positive matches and provide minimal specific detail. The 67-marker test provides 81% more marker data than the 37-marker for only 42% more in cost. But we're always glad to have a 12-marker, and it can always be upgraded as a Christmas or birthday present to yourself without the need for a new sample.
Requirements
A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. They are of the most interest in cultures where surnames are passed on from father to son like the Y-Chromosome. This project is for males taking a Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) test. Thus, the individual who tests must be a male who wants to check his direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, Y-DNA67, or Y-DNA111 test and who has one of the surnames listed for the project. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA. Females who would like to check their father's direct paternal line can have a male relative with his surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNAPlus test or the mtFullSequence test and participate in an mtDNA project. Both men and women may take our autosomal Family Finder test to discover recent relationships across all family lines.
