Description
y-DNA testing is one of the newest tools available to genealogists. These tests help genealogists verify their paternal ancestry in a quick and easy way. It saves time, prevents mistakes, and provides invaluable data that can be obtained in no other way. This father's father's father's... line usually follows surnames. Here we are focused on variations of the Coleman surname. This is where all Coleman (and similar surnames) come together to share results and see how we are all related.
This Coleman Surname Group is hosted by FamilyTreeDNA, and is a project ran entirely by volunteers. No one here works or profits from FTDNA. We focus on all persons named Coleman or some variation of it including: Calman, Coalman, Collmann, Colman, Coulman, Kohlmann, Kohlman, Koleman, Kollman, Kollmann, Kolman, Kolmann. Any other reasonable spelling variations are welcome to join the project.
Only males have Y-chromosomes, therefore only COLEMAN (or variant) males can participate. If you are female, and wish to participate in the group you can have a male COLEMAN (or variant) relative submit a y-DNA sample. To participate even more, members are requested to share their direct male line ancestry back to the earliest known COLEMAN (or variant) ancestor in the form of a pedigree (excluding living persons).
We have descendants of many Coleman lineages such as:
Robert Coleman of Charles City County, VA
Robert Coleman of Mobjack Bay, VA (Gloucester County)
Robert Coleman of Nansemond County, VA
Coleman men of Nantucket, Ireland, England, Wales, Germany, Russia, Poland, USA, and many more.
So, if you are a Coleman (or variant spelling) PLEASE JOIN. If you are not a Coleman (or variant), and have no Coleman (or variant) matches, please do not join, and instead join your corresponding project.
Requirements
A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. They are of the most interest in cultures where surnames are passed on from father to son like the Y-Chromosome. This project is for males taking a Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) test. Thus, the individual who tests must be a male who wants to check his direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, Y-DNA67, or Y-DNA111 test and who has one of the surnames listed for the project. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA. Females who would like to check their father's direct paternal line can have a male relative with his surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNAPlus test or the mtFullSequence test and participate in an mtDNA project. Both men and women may take our autosomal Family Finder test to discover recent relationships across all family lines.
