About us

The VA-1600s project is established to focus on the early Virginia families. We have separate projects at FTDNA for mtDNA and yDNA, as we need to isolate the appropriate portion of a person's dna.

This project is for Surname (Paternal - yDNA) participants. We welcome all direct line descendants who trace their paternal line back to Virginia in the 1600s.

APPLICANT MUST BE ABLE TO DOCUMENT ANCESTOR'S RESIDENCE IN ORIGINAL VIRGINIA SHIRES PRIOR TO 1700.   IF YOU CANNOT DO THIS, PLEASE DO NOT REQUEST TO JOIN!

The area included is made up of the eight original Shires (counties):

Accawmack (Northampton), Charles City, Charles River (York), Elizabeth City, Henrico, James City, Warrosquyoake (Isle of Wight) and Warwick River (Warwick). Also included is Chickacoan District (Northumberland). Daughter counties are Gloucester, Lancaster, New Kent, Surry, Westmoreland, Accomack, Stafford, Middlesex, New Norfolk, Upper Norfolk, Lower Norfolk, Norfolk, Nansemond, Princess Ann, King and Queen, Essex, and Richmond.
