As of August 6, 2009, we have 49 distinct Stone groups; 4 groups are awaiting results. Individuals are placed into groups when the genetic distance of their DNA marker tests make a relevant match. The technical explanation of this is on the Family Tree DNA website at:
http://www.familytreedna.com/genetic-distance-markers.aspx?testtype=25 ,
http://www.familytreedna.com/genetic-distance-markers.aspx?testtype=37 or
http://www.familytreedna.com/genetic-distance-markers.aspx?testtype=67 .
The genealogy data listed is what was sent as the earliest known STONE ancestor and IS NOT SOURCED or DOCUMENTED here. It is unknown how accurate it might be. It is only listed as a clue and it is hoped that groups can work together to figure out the relationships and who the common ancestor might be.

*CHARLES P. STONE, b. bet. 1794-1800.
THOMAS STONE purchased land in Fairfield Co., SC in 1773. Presumably, all his known children were born there. He left no Will. Through a DNA match, we were able to determine that ISAAC STONE was a brother to WILLIAM STONE. William, the oldest son, inherited the family farm, thus connecting him to his father Thomas. Plus, many of his children had the middle name of Pickett, his mother's maiden name. William moved his family to Clay Co., AL in the early 1840s. Isaac moved his family to Wilson Co., TN in the early 1820s. JAMES VINCENT STONE moved his family to Clay Co. AL with his uncle William. Nothing is known of THOMAS STONE, Jr. or CHARLES P. STONE.

JOSEPH STONE, Sr. is probably the same Joseph who was born Jan. 1, 1716/17 in Framingham, MA. The lineage going back from this Joseph is Nathaniel, Nathaniel, Elder John, and then Deacon Gregory Stone, who came from England to Watertown, MA, in 1635.

The above data is well-documented and sourced through Elk Run Parish records and Fauquier Co., VA deeds as well as other documents. Several books, "The Stones of Surry," "Stones of Poynton Manor" and "Of the Stones" claim that this Thomas Stone of Fauquier Co. is the son of Capt. Thomas Stone of MD, grandson of Gov. William Stone through his son John Stone the elder of MD. Evidence of this relationship is still inconclusive.

NOTE:
The Chronicle of Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish in Colonial Virginia, published in April 2009 studies the Stones in Group 7. The book covers the history of Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish who was born about 1699. All indications this Thomas was the great grandson of Gov. William Stone of Maryland and an uncle to Thomas Stone the Signer of the Declaration of Independence. The book also covers Thomas Stone Jr. who married Mary Butler and remained in Fauquier County Virginia, William who married Hannah Conway and who lived in Surry, NC, and John Stone who married Mildruge Corder and who lived Fauquier County, Virginia and later in Laurens County, SC. The book has newly discovered records which significantly modify what was written in the Stones of Surry, The Stones of Poynton Manor and ….of The Stones. The content is well sourced and footnoted throughout. It contains plats and accurate scale plat drawings created for the book, deed abstracts, images of original grants, first time transcriptions of deeds, family wills and probate records, images of Revolutionary War records, and old historic letters. It also provides maps, images, and color photos of the actual Licking Run and Carters Run homesteads in Virginia. The data is analyzed relative to other period information. The book has one complete chapter dedicated to the grandsons and a grand- daughter in-law who fought in the revolution. Two versions of the book are available -- one is the Std. Version which covers the above material and a Surry – Stokes version which also contains a history for John Stone and his wife Bethsey Curry Stone. In earlier histories John was confused as William’s brother, in reality John was William’s son. Research for this book was conducted over several years on site in the counties where the family members lived. Newman’s archives in Maryland were also reviewed, as well as, major state archives like the Library of Virginia, The North Carolina Archives in Raleigh, NC and the South Carolina Archives in Columbia, SC.
The book will be printed on 81/2 by 11, 60 pound archival paper, and dependant on cost will be either hard bound or perfect bound. The Std. Version is 246 pages and the Surry- Stokes version is 284 pages.
If you have any questions or would like to obtain a copy contact William Stone at bstone7@ roadrunner.com or William Stone, 7 cedar lane, Lenox, MA 01240.

GROUP #8 DNA ANALYSIS: There were several Stone families living in Prince William County Virginia in the 18th century. Pre-Civil War records are fragmented and thus proving lines of descent is difficult. #8 A,B,+ C Thomas Stone was born about 1720. He first appears in records when he received a land grant in 1742 in Prince William County for 152 acres. The accompanying survey for this grant records that it borders land he already owns. On the tax records he is charged on 225 acres in the Occoquan watershed area and his property is 16 m NE of the courthouse (should have read 16 m NW). No deed has been found to account for the additional 73 acres and no metes and bounds description for the 225 acres exists. When Thomas died he willed these 225 acres to his grandson Thomas, son of James. The land was described as that part of my land where my son James Stone formerly lived to be divided from the rest of my land by a branch that comes out of Mr. Hammit's plantation. James was to have use of this land during his Natural life. Thomas willed the remainder of his land (293 acres)to his son George. George died without heirs and the land descended to George's two sisters Elizabeth and Sarah Bradfield. That land is identified in deeds when Bradfield descendants sold it in the early 1800s. Neither Thomas nor George are ever found paying taxes on these 293 acres and it has not been discovered how Thomas came to own the land. Thomas had a brother Samuel whose descendants have not been traced.
There was another Thomas Stone who was a contemporary of Thomas #8. That Thomas lived in the part of Prince William County that became part of Fauquier County when it was formed in 1759. This is group #7. Since there is not a match between group #7 and group #8 thoughts that there might be a relationship between those two Stone families can probably be put to rest.
Most of Thomas's son James' descendants have been traced up to the late 19th century. With the results of #8-D + E there are matches with Stone families that have never been listed with the descendants of Thomas' son James. If their ancestries open up, clues will probably appear that may shed light on #8 Thomas' ancestry.
A book documenting the Descendants of Thomas Stone (d. 1791) of Prince William County VA is in the research stage. Projected publication date is 2013.

James Hilliard Stone, age 72 in 1898, gave the follwing information. As his grandmother had died before he was born, he had forgotten her name and the given name of his grandfather (great-grandfather) who was killed in the War of Independence. James Hilliard Stone said:
"The family tradition is that Capt. John Stone was killed by the Pequot Indians of Connecticut, and Tories at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Supposedly, he is the father of William Stone. Capt. John Stone had made a stump speech for freedom and independence, and on his way home, was assassinated. The Independents found and killed his slayers. His widow moved from VA to SC when William Stone was five, right after the death of her husband. Later, William Stone went back to VA to marry a Miss Lynch of Lynchburg, VA. William Stone was a Baptist minister and farmer, and built what is called Cedar Shoal Baptist Church at Spartanburg, SC."

Around 1800, they all moved to SC on the Yadkin River (described as the Rice District); later to NC, East TN and Central KY where the brothers separated. It is probable that they settled: one brother in Bullitt Co., KY, one brother in Warren Co., KY, and abt. 1805-6, William and his brother, Christopher, moved to Hardin Co., KY, to that part which later became Grayson Co." In the 1850 Grayson Co. census, both Aaron and Hosea Stone declared their place of birth as SC, so this would place William Stone and his brothers in SC between 1789 and 1792.

Note: Stephen and Mariah appear in the 1850 U.S. Census, Cass County Georgia, p. 108, dwelling 119, family 119; NARA microfilm M432_63.
On the previous page a 63 year old Stephen Stone born SC and 66 year old wife Elizabeth also born SC are listed in dwelling 119, family 119. This are most likely Stephen's parents.
Since Stephen does not appear in the 1860 census and son Marshall was born in Jan 1854 it is most likely that Stephen died between 1853 and 1860.

In the 1880 census of Spartanburg Co., SC, the birthplace of Charles and Louisa's parents is SC. The family story is that Louisa’s maiden name was also Stone. But they were supposedly not blood relations. Another family legend says that Benjamin, fleeing a possible murder charge ran off to New York. My Aunt and Benjamin’s son Frank were pen pals during one of the wars. I have located what appears to be Benjamin and his family including Frank in Syracuse NY and later in New York City. Both times Benjamin claimed SC as his birthplace.

Henry Alford Stone's mother was Mary Sarah Wallis (?). One researcher states that it is his belief that Henry Alford Stone's father was Nathaniel Stone or the brother of Nathaniel Stone. Nathaniel's father (Henry Alford Stone's grandfather) is believed to have been a William Stone from SC. This document also indicates that Nathaniel Stone died on June 18, 1815 and is buried near Dallas Co., AL. If Nathaniel was, in fact, Sarah's husband, then other questions arise regarding the paternity of her children born after Henry Alford Stone.
