Project Background:

This project was initiated in Oct 2004 and (as at Sep 2008) has 31 members.
While a surname itself may give us incomplete or misleading or, at best, only general information about the origin of a family, DNA-testing can give us concrete evidence for identifying and separating family lines.
Y-chromosome DNA testing is especially helpful because the male Y-chromosome is handed down, father to son, unchanged through the generations, except for rare mutations which, in themselves, can be helpful indicators of branching. The accessibility and affordability of family DNA testing is doubtless the greatest technical advance in the history of genealogical research because -- at long, long last -- we have a tool to break down those brick walls!
And with a surname like ROWE, which can be very common in certain areas, brick walls abound. Help us break them down, by joining the project and submitting your pedigree

Project Goals:

The goal of the ROWE Surname Project is to distinguish between ROWE ancestral lines, worldwide.
Any reasonable spelling variant is included, and as testing via a group is cheaper than going it alone outside a group, you are welcome to join this one.

Project News:

2008: 5 Sep - several more results in, and kits ordered. Check out the World Families Network ROWE project pages.
An additional version of the results table has been added, showing modal values for each haplogroup, with colour coded distance from them.
Should anyone wish to make a start on assigning family groups to these we'd love to hear from you.
2008: 17 Apr - Y-Results subgroups updated by sorting into the currently allocated haplogroups. Several new results in with resulting updates to the World Families Network ROWE project pages.
2008: 5 Feb - Lorna took over as coordinator. The data and support services such as the patriarch reports, forum etc from the World Families Network ROWE project remain in place.
(My particular ROWE interests are the English Devonshire families of Bere Ferrers who have emigrated to many parts of the world.)
2004 to 2008: 20 results have been posted to the WFN pages above, spread over 4 haplogroups.
Sometime between Nov 2004 and Feb 2008 the project was switched to the care of the World Families Network.
2004: 19 Nov - as of this date, two ROWEs and one ROW have joined.
2004: 29 Oct - the ROWE Surname Project was announced.

Project Results:

Result discussions and pedigrees (Patriarch reports) to supplement the tables shown under the y-Results page are available on the ROWE family results on the World Families Network site
Remember to update your user preferences on Family Tree DNA to show your earliest known ancestor's location so that the map looks pretty!

When your results are returned it is also recommended that you click on the links to update your results to y-Search (where you may well find other relations), and to submit a basic pedigree via gedcom.
