Roark DNA Surname Project

Project Surnames:

RorkRowark

Project Background:
The object of this project is to assist Roark researchers in busting through the brick walls in their Roark line. Plus, the exchanging of paper research once there are exact DNA matches.

We welcome any male Roark to join our study and take the DNA test. The link to join our group and purchase a test kit is on the left side of this page. Here are the costs of the tests:

* 12-marker test--$99
* 25-marker test--$148
* 37-marker test--$189

We highly recommend that you order a 25-marker or 37-marker test. But if you order the 12-marker test, you can always upgrade later on. The cost to upgrade from a 12-marker test to a 25-marker test is $90. From a 12-marker test to a 37-marker test, it is $149. So it costs a little more to upgrade, than if you purchase the 25-marker or 37-marker test now.

When you order your DNA test, Family Tree DNA sends you a test kit through the mail. The test itself is simple and painless...just the swabbing of the inside cheeks of the mouth. The swabbing picks up loose skin cells which has the DNA to be tested. Then you mail the test kit back to Family Tree DNA. It is as simple as that.

Please e-mail the administrator at the address above if you have any questions.

Project Goals:
Basically, the Roarks came from Ireland. We are attempting to establish the timelines and countries of when and where the different Roark lines arrived and left Ireland. We hope to answer the question of whether there is one main Roark line, or are there many distinct lines. And we will see if there is a genetic link between the different spellings of the Roark surname. For each distinct Roark group, we will set-up a small genealogy report starting with the oldest male Roark ancestor and then one or two generations. This will give all a sense of where the paper research has stopped. In the Roark groups, we will only show genealogy data that is PROVABLE. There will be no hunches or guesswork. We'll let the DNA test results prove out the hunches.

Project News:
** We have added the Haplogroup designations to the groups. Haplogroup "I" has origins from northwestern Europe, hence Vikings. Haplogroup "R1b" is western Europe. The groups that have taken the SNP test are marked as "confirmed." Groups that have designations without the SNP test are marked as "predicted." Groups without a Haplogroup designation cannot be predicted by Family Tree DNA at this time, and will need a SNP test to determine their Haplogroup.

** We now have a Roark General Fund. If you want to contribute to the Roark General Fund, click on the link to the left. You can contribute via credit card, PayPal, or check.

Project Results:
As of Nov. 8, 2006, we have six members in the Roark DNA Surname Project. We have the test results on three distinct Roark groups. Below are the groups starting with the oldest Roark ancestor:

Group #1
Test results received. Kit #26796.
Haplogroup: I (confirmed).
Contact: genesisstone@msn.com

* JOHN ROARK, b. abt. 1784, NC; d. aft. 1854.
* Nancy Unknown (wife), b. abt. 1780, NC; d. aft. 1854.
Children of John & Nancy:
* MARY ROARK, b. abt. 1819, Smith Co., TN.
* JAMES ROARK, b. bet. 1810-1819, TN; d. bet. 1844-1847; m. Lavina Unknown, b. abt. 1813, VA; d. aft. 1856.
Children of James & Lavina:
* NATHANIEL ROARK, b. abt. 1831, Muhlenberg Co., KY; m. Lena Unknown.
* SARAH ROARK, b. abt. 1835, KY.
* ELIZA ROARK, b. abt. 1836, KY.
* JESSE ROARK, b. March 27, 1839, Muhlenberg Co., KY; m. Nancy Emaline Underwood.
* JOSEPH M. ROARK, b. June 12, 1844, Muhlenberg Co., KY; m. Permelia Dukes.

This Roark line presumably came from North Carolina to Smith Co. TN in the early 1800s. Smith Co. lost their early marriage records, so it has been difficult to connect these Roarks to each other. This Roark branch moved to Muhlenberg Co., KY in the late 1830s, and many descendants live in Muhlenberg Co. to this day. It is believed that this Roark line is connected to the Allen Co., KY Roarks.

DNA Test Results (Alleles) for Project Members

* Haplogroups in green have been confirmed by SNP testing. Haplogroups in red have been predicted by Family Tree DNA based on unambiguous results in the individual's personal page. This has been placed on this GAP page for your ease and convenience. Please note that for any predicted results we see no reason for ordering a SNP test to confirm the Haplogroup. if a – is in the HAPLO field then we feel that the comparative results are not clear and unambiguous and if the kit holder wants to know their SNP with 100% confidence they may consider ordering a SNP confirmation test.
