About us

Until early ‘07, members of the John “Tankard” Maus lines in New York State and Canada were uncertain of their ancestry due to an early generation of immigrants having been killed during the French and Indian Wars. However, after recent Y-DNA results became available, it has become apparent there is a close DNA match to a Mouse line in WV whose ancestors were originally named Mauss when they immigrated through Pennsylvania. Even more promising, this Mouse line was made up of three brothers named Johann Daniel Mouse, Johann Frederick Mouse and Johan Georg Mouse who changed their names upon landing in Philadelphia circa 1740-50, and the latter; Johan Georg Mouse was killed at the Ft. Seybert Massacre in Pendleton Co., Virginia, now West Virginia on 4/28/1758. Although we haven’t been able to determine if Johan George Mouse was the father of John “Tankard” Maus, this at least indicates a connection to the Pennsylvania Maus immigrants and provides the basis for further testing. Tankard got his name when he was redeemed from the Indians a few years after his capture by being traded back with a silver tankard.
