The immigrant to Ammerica settled in Fort Orange, Ulster County, New York ca 1646. His name was Jacob Luursen (Jacob son of Luur. He was born in 1616 in Wageningen, Holland and died 29 Apr 1655 at Fort Orange, Albany, New York, USA. He married 28 Mar 1638 in Amsterdam Holland, to Styntie Douwes by whom he had seven known children. When the population grew to the point necessary to require individual surnames,only one of them "chose" to add the surname "van Kuykendall". Luur Jacobsen (Luur son of Jacob) chose his surname ca 1706 as documented by the baptismal record of his daughter Sytjen (Seyte) van Kuykendall in the Dutch Reform Church at Kingston, NY. With minor exceptions, every Kuykendall by any spelling,Kuykendall,Kirkendall, Coykendall, descend from this one man.
