About us

Most of the persons in the US bearing the Knierman surname along with the many variants in spelling are believed to be descended from Germany arriving in PA.

The first Knierman variant spelling appears to be Helfrich Knieriemen who arrived on the Ship Barclay from Rotterdam in 1754. Helfrich is found in the 1754 PA census living in Philadelphia.

The first US census to list a Knierman spelling appears in the 1810 census for Conestoga, Lancaster Co, PA. The names appeared for (John Knireman, Jacob Knireman and Henry Knireman).

Variants of the Knierman surname exist not only in the US, but also in other German speaking countries such as Germany, Switzerland, Prussia, Hesse-Kassel, Bavaria as well as some parts of France.

The exact origins and spellings are unclear, the Project is interested in extending our project to those outside of this country in order to establish possible links to those bearing our surname abroad. The German word Knerem is defined as a shoemakers' strap or stirrup, a cobbler, Knieriemen.
