Hrod, Hod, Hood, Hodges, Hodgkins, Rodgers, and Rogers are names which we would like to find out if were related in long past history. The other names are known traced variations of Hotchkiss.
This is a Y-DNA project looking for matches in Y chromosomes, of which exact matches are passed from father to son. Thus only men may participate directly. Women who are interested should get their male relatives to join.

Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project Goals: The objective of this group is to trace and find the connections between as many of the Hotchkiss lines as possible. For those lines which have not yet been linked, we would like to be able to determine, whether they are linked, and how much farther back we are likely to need to go to find the connection. We also believe this name to be of Norman origin. We are hoping to somehow find a way to trace this Norman origin. One such ancient Norman name which may be related is 'Hrod'. We are particularly interested in proving the relationship between several of the lines we have already traced, but not yet linked. These include lines currently found in England, Scotland, Wales, the United States and most other English speaking countries.
Note: Any (non-required) contributions to the project general fund will be used only for ordering additional tests and analysis relative to this project. This may include ordering tests for potential members who would otherwise not be able to take the tests.

Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project Results: Our results will reflect the tests of all of those who join the project. In order to protect privacy and provide groupings of general interest, the charts shown in the following section will be labeled with the oldest known person in the line of each person who is tested. Hopefully we will eventually have representatives of all of the current Hotchkiss lines.
So far, we have the results of five people's tests, which show that our name includes people belonging to two haplogroups: I1a and R1b1c. At least one I1A tested so far has been shown to be I1a-N-D (or Norse Danish). This is distinguished by a DSN 462 value of 13 as opposed to 12, which clearly splits the I1a population from Denmark and north from those to the South. R1b1c is the most common haplogroup in Europe. Both of these would have been common among the the Vikings or Normans. This agrees with our findings regarding the name likely being of Norman origin. We will update this section with further findings on our own Hotchkiss lines as they become available.
National Geographic's Genographic Project says that our I1a ancestors carried the following chromosome markers which show their journey through history:
M168 > M89 > M170 > M253
Research on these markers apparently tell the story of how our early ancestors made their way out of the Rift Valley of Africa, and across the then lush land of the Middle East only to become isolated from Africa by the drought that turned it into the desert it is today, before entering Europe during the Ice Ages. Of special interest to those with the Hotchkiss name, the Vikings are said to carry one of these markers. One way to order your tests is to first join the National Geographic Project, and then have your data transfered to FamilyTree DNA. This will get you well started with a 12 marker test.
The following chart gives details on the ancestry of our members so far. Since we are publishing "Most Distant Ancestor", this is showing the line from that ancestor on toward the member, but hopefully not coming forward enough to impend on privacy. For those which had records prior to the 1700's, we cut-off at the first person born in the 1800's. For the others we went on a bit.
