THE GUTHRIE DNA SURNAME PROJECT

Many branches. Shared discoveries.

The Guthrie DNA Surname Project brings together DNA evidence and family research to explore how Guthrie families are connected. Testing has identified several distinct paternal lineages, known as Guthrie Family Groups. By comparing results with documented ancestry, we can investigate family origins, explore connections between branches and develop new research leads.

All Guthrie descendants are welcome, including those whose ancestry passes through Guthrie women. Every participant can contribute through DNA testing, family records, research and collaboration.

OUR RESEARCH FOCUS

Y-DNA is our primary tool for studying Guthrie paternal lines. It follows the biological father-to-son line and helps identify connections that surnames and family trees alone cannot establish. Big Y testing adds detail that can help distinguish branches and explore their shared ancestry.

A suitable Y-DNA tester must descend from the Guthrie ancestor being studied through an unbroken line of fathers and sons. Other descendants can participate by helping identify a willing relative to represent their line.

Before purchasing a test or upgrade, explore our Choosing a DNA Test guide or contact Ann to discuss your research question.

AUTOSOMAL DNA: WORKING TOGETHER

Autosomal DNA can provide useful cousin matches and supporting clues across different branches of a family. We welcome these results as part of our shared research.

Members take an active role by gathering relevant Guthrie matches, documenting family connections and organizing their findings. Ann is available to help with focused questions, discuss uncertain interpretations and suggest next steps when you are stuck.

SHARE YOUR GUTHRIE ANCESTRY

Please provide the tester’s ancestral line, beginning with the tester and following each connecting generation back to the earliest proven Guthrie ancestor. Include spouses, birth and death dates, and places when known. Supporting records and tree links are helpful.

If your ancestry is incomplete, share what you know and identify any uncertain connections. This information helps verify lineages and develop the Guthrie Research Tree, where DNA participation can be mapped alongside family relationships.

You may include your lineage in the project join request or share it privately after Ann replies. See Joining the DNA Project for the steps.

CONTINUE THE DISCOVERY

Guthrie Genealogy is Ann Guthrie’s independently created and maintained research website. It complements the DNA project with family histories, records and research resources. Everyone is welcome to ask questions, contribute research and share family stories; DNA testing and project membership are not required.
