About us

Welcome to the Dunning Family yDNA Project. This study was established to explore and clarify the paternal lineages associated with the Dunning surname, with a particular focus on tracing the ancestry of Benjamin Dunning, born in 1679 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Our research has identified two distinct yDNA lines among participants with the Dunning surname:

1. I-BY189222 Lineage (Scottish Origin - Carruthers Connection)

This group shares a common SNP, I-BY189222, and all tested members trace their Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) to Benjamin Dunning (b.1679, Boston, MA). This line is a downstream branch of I-BY188888, which is associated with the Carruthers family of Scotland. The primary goal of this lineage's research is to further investigate Benjamin Dunning’s origins and how his line may connect to Scottish ancestry.

2. R-M269 Lineage (Likely English Origin)

The second major Dunning yDNA group falls under haplogroup R-M269, one of the most common paternal lineages in Western Europe. Based on current evidence, this line is believed to represent Dunning families of English origin.

To better support this line of research, we are currently seeking a Co-Administrator who can help manage and interpret results for this branch of the project. Ideal candidates will have a personal or genealogical interest in the R-M269 line and some familiarity with genetic genealogy.

If you’re a Dunning male or have a close male relative with the Dunning surname, we invite you to join the project and contribute to our growing understanding of the Dunning family's deep ancestry.

For more information or to inquire about the Co-Administrator role, please contact the project administrator.
