Project Background:
The purpose of this project is to aid genealogists researching the surname CORBIN and its variants through the use of Y-chromosome DNA testing. All CORBIN/etc. males are welcome to join the project. As only males have a Y-chromosome, only males can be tested. If you are female, you can have a male relative submit a sample on behalf of your line. For further information, please see the project web page at my genealogy web site:

CORBIN Y-chromosome DNA Surname Project: Home Page

To participate meaningfully, testees will need to share their direct male line ancestry back to the earliest known CORBIN, either in the form of a pedigree chart or, preferable, family group sheets (excluding living persons). This is a requirement, not an option, for participation in the project because DNA test results, without lineages, are useless.

One CORBIN line turns out to have an NPE, a "Non-Paternal Event" (i.e., a hidden adoption or illicit paternity), in his patrilineal line. He is, in fact, a genetic descendant of Henry SHERMAN (c1512-c1590) of Dedham, Essex, England, several of whose descendants emigrated to New England in the 17th Century. If you are a male SHERMAN descended from Henry on a patrilineal line and you have an STR test result of DYS446=14, please contact the project admin (address above). Our CORBIN has this value, which is non-modal for the family, so you may be able to help us deduce which Massachusetts SHERMAN is his ancestor.

Project Goals:
The goals of the project are: 1) to help living descendants support their "on paper" genealogies; 2) to uncover the origins and relationships of surname CORBIN and its spelling variations; 3) to reveal and resolve NPE's in CORBIN pedigrees.

Project News:
19 Sep 2004 - the CORBIN Surname Project was opened.
8 Jun 2005 - one individual joined the project.
18 Oct 2006 - Diana Gale Matthiesen becomes project admin.
22 Aug 2008 - as of this date, the project has 22 members, with results returned for 20. So far, nine independent (unrelated) lines of CORBINs have been identified.

Project Results:
Project results may be viewed here on this page (in the table below) or in more detail at my web site:

DNA Test Results (Alleles) for Project Members

* Haplogroups in green have been confirmed by SNP testing. Haplogroups in red have been predicted by Family Tree DNA based on unambiguous results in the individual's personal page. This has been placed on this GAP page for your ease and convenience. Please note that for any predicted results we see no reason for ordering a SNP test to confirm the Haplogroup. if a – is in the HAPLO field then we feel that the comparative results are not clear and unambiguous and if the kit holder wants to know their SNP with 100% confidence they may consider ordering a SNP confirmation test.
