Project Background: This project was started in August 2003 for genealogy researchers who are interested in using genetics technology in their research. The concept is simple: a specific portion of DNA is passed down from father to son unchanged for generations. By analyzing this small but specific segment and comparing it to others, it is possible to determine if there is likely a relationship (or not) between two males. The testing process is also simple; a small brush like a toothbrush is used to collect some skin cells from the inside of the participant’s mouth – no blood drawing is involved. Certain “markers” are located and counted by the laboratory. A 25 to 25 positive marker match indicates a 50% chance that the participants had a common ancestor within the past seven generations, provided they share the same or similar surname. This testing can also prove with certainty that two lines are not connected, which can be valuable to researchers since no time or resources are then needed to research those non-connected lines.
Members are automatically notified when a match is found with another member with a near match - provided they have given consent for the notification. Inclusion in a larger world-wide database (Y-Search.com) is also available and free of charge.
A list of names that may be included in this study includes: Coons, Coen, Cone, Coon, Coan, Cohn, Coonce, Coone, Coones, Coom, Combs, Coome, Coombs, Coone, Coonts, Coontz, Coonse, Coam, Coehm, Cohne, Conn, Coohn, Coun, Counts, Coune, Couyne, Cuen, Cuene, Cune, Cuon, Koon, Koons, Kuhn, Koen, Kohn, Kone, Koone, Kuehne, Kuehn, Kun, Kohne, Kuhen, Kuhne, Kuhns, Kune, Kunne, Kuun , Koan, Koanne, Kouen, Kouhn, Koun, Kuean, Kuehn, Kuin, Kuine, Kuinn, Koontz, Kuntz, Koonts, Kuntze, Kontz, Kountz, Kountze, Kuentz, Keuntz, Kundtz, Kuntz, Cuntz, Koents, Koentze, Kountis, Kounts, Kunets, Kunetz, Kunts, Kunz, Cuntze, Coants, Coantz, Coents, Gohn, Gahn, MacCoone, MacCoon, McCoon, Mc Coun, MacComb. There is a large discount on the price of testing if you arrange your test through a group such as this one. Use the "Request to Join this Group" tab to the left to order a kit and get started.

Project Goals: | Members are free to pursue whatever connections they may find using information from the test results. Several members with "brick walls" have found connections to other lines which have given them new direction for their research. In another case a suspected adoption many years ago was proven. |
Project Results: See the groupings in the table below. These results indicate a very high probability of a relationship between the lines that are within the same color-highlighted area. Groups are made up of test results that show a 12/12 match for those who have done the 12 marker test, and at least 23/25 match for those who have done the 25 marker test.
There are some cases where a 11/12 match exists between members which can also indicate a possible relationship. However, some of these members results would place them in two or more groups at one time so I have not grouped them in the table.
If results are not within a highlighted group, no near match has yet been found.
Details about some of the participants' family trees can be found here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~coondnapage/ |
DNA Test Results (Alleles) for Project Members * Haplogroups in green have been
confirmed by SNP testing. Haplogroups in red have
been predicted by Family Tree DNA based on unambiguous results in the
individual's personal page. This has been placed on this GAP page for your ease
and convenience. Please note that for any predicted results we see no reason for
ordering a SNP test to confirm the Haplogroup. if a – is in the HAPLO field then
we feel that the comparative results are not clear and unambiguous and if the
kit holder wants to know their SNP with 100% confidence they may consider
ordering a SNP confirmation test.
