| Project Background: The Carr Surname DNA Genealogy Project uses YDNA to establish a genetic profile, called a haplotype, for Carr [including Kerr, Karr, etc.] family paternal lines. All phonetic variations of Carr are included since Carr families have spread far and wide around the world and left descendants with many spelling variations of the ancestral name. Y DNA is usually unchanged as it is passed from the father to the son. Changes do occur however over many generation, though very slowly. Using the similarity of two men's haplotypes, we can establish how closely related they are. Two men having a Y DNA haplotype that is identical have a high probability of sharing a recent common paternal ancestor. When several men with documented descent from a common paternal ancestor are tested, they establish a haplotype for the male descendants of that family founder. Other family historians can compare their paternal line YDNA haplotype to this founder's to see how closely they are related to this line. The YDNA haplotype also identifies possible descent from ancestral population groups; western European, northern European, eastern European, southern European, middle eastern, African, indigenous American, Asian, etc.
YDNA haplotypes are used by surname projects for family history since both YDNA and family surnames usually pass from father to son in subsequent generations. Anglicization of surnames such as Kerr, Karr and other phonetically similar ancestral names to Carr has been common as people moved into lands controlled by England. Other phonetic variations of surname spellings are also common between generations as well. Thus all branches of the same family do not necessarily share a common spelling in the current generation. Ancestral names that are phonetically equivalent to Carr or that are known to have been anglicized to Carr include Ker, Kerr, Carre, Kier, Kear, Car, Corr, Kar, Karr, Karre, Kaar, Kaare, Kaer, Kaurr, Kay, Kehr, Kurr. Families with any of these surnames, or who had a paternal ancestor who used one of these surnames may share common paternal ancestry and are welcome to join the Carr Surname DNA Genealogy Project.
Establishing familial connections between paternal lines with common YDNA haplotypes requires some genealogical information. YDNA testing can tell you the probability of a common paternal line ancestor within recent generations. Knowing the probability of common ancestry with another paternal line can provide clues for additional traditional family history research, which could extend the family history to earlier generations.

Joining the adventure is easy and inexpensive, just submit a request for a DNA test kit at the link below. Once you have your kit, scrub the inside of your cheeks for a good minute with each cotton swab provided, place the swabs in the envelope provided and return the kit. Results are usually available about 4 weeks after receipt of the sample by the lab. The monetary cost is comparable to genealogy research weekend, the value much more. You will learn your Carr paternal line YDNA haplotype and see which ancestral Carr paternal lines you are closely related to. You will also learn if your Carr paternal line ancestors were Norsemen, from germanic tribes, from Iberia or from one of the many other population groups that settled the world 10,000 years or more ago. The possibility for more connections to your paternal line is possible as the project grows.

Maintain a YDNA haplotype database to compare and the various paternal line haplotypes of Carr Families around the world today.
Identification of possible Carr paternal line ancestral origins based on Haplogroup assignment.

Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project News: 4 March 2007 - Recent participation by documented descendants of Gov. Caleb Carr and his brother Robert Carr has provided a haplotype that can be used to identify the many paternal line descendants of these brothers.
1 September 2006 - Matches found between paternal lines of early Carr family settlers to Tennessee and neighboring states supports family lore of common paternal ancestry and that there are at least two Carr paternal lines common to Putnam County, Tennessee. Descendants of these Carrs were also early settlers of Texas.

Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project Results: A YDNA Haplotype has been identified for descendants Gov. Caleb and Robert Carr of Rhode Island and two common haplotypes of Carrs from Tennessee and adjacent states based on YDNA testing of several documented male descendants of these Carr ancestors. Carr family YDNA haplotypes established include families tracing their origins to ancestral Kerr lands in Scotland, Ireland, England, Germany, Croatia, Belize, Africa, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Delaware, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.
MtDNA, maternal line DNA, results of project members will also be listed on the project public web site, but do not aid in paternal line genealogy. MtDNA passes from a mother to her children, since a woman's surname changes with marriage, the ancestral connection between surname and mtDNA is lost for the maternal line. Single Nucleotide Protein, SNP test results of members will be tracked by the project as well. SNP DNA test results identify ancestral population descent, Haplogroup, and are useful only to suggest prehistorical ancestral origins for the paternal line.
