Project Background:
The purpose of this project is to aid genealogists researching surnames BIDDLE, BEDELL, BUDDELL, etc. and their variants through the use of Y-chromosome DNA testing. All BIDDLE/etc. males are welcome to join the project. As only males have a Y-chromosome, only males can be tested. If you are female, you will need to have a male relative submit a sample on behalf of your line.

To participate meaningfully, testees will need to share their patrilineal (direct male line) ancestry back to the earliest known BIDDLE/etc., preferably in the form of a GEDCOM. This is a requirement, not an option, for participation in the project because DNA test results, without lineages, are genealogically useless.

For further information, please see my Introduction to Genetics and Genealogy, the Understanding Your Y-DNA Test Results, and this page of Frequently Asked Questions.

Anyone interested in the topic of DNA testing as it pertains to surname BIDDLE/etc. is welcome to join the BIDDLE-DNA Mailing List, whether you are a member of the project or not.

The FamilyTreeDNA web site indicates that five BIDDLEs and one BIDLE were tested with them prior to the opening of this project. We would like to especially encourage these individuals to join the BIDDLE Y-DNA project.

DISCLAIMER: In no way do your project administrators profit financially from this project; we are both volunteers, and genealogy is our hobby.

Project Goals:
The goals of the project are: 1) to help descendants support their paper pedigrees and identify their progenitors — to break through those "brick walls"; 2) to expose bad connections and NPEs (i.e., "non-paternal events," such as hidden adoptions and illicit paternities); and 3) to discover the origins and relationships of surnames BIDDLE, BEDELL, BUDDELL, etc., and their variations.

Project News:
2007 Oct 5 - Diana Matthiesen opened the BIDDLE Y-DNA Surname Project.
2008 May 20 - Joe Rhea signed on as project co-administrator and lineage manager.
2008 Jul 19 - as of this date, six individuals have joined the FTDNA project, plus we have results from a seventh individual who was tested elsewhere.

Project Results:
So far, three of our members have a DNA match: the two descendants of Robert BEDDELL and the descendant of Stephen BEDELL, who is presumed to descend from Robert. The BUDDELL (#108870) has a match outside the project, but we've been unable to persuade this individual to join the project, so we don't know his lineage.

Comparative Results Table for Haplogroup R1b Individuals
This table makes it easier to compare results for the R1b members. It also includes the results of the individual tested at DNA-Heritage, which cannot be added to the table below.

DNA Test Results (Alleles) for Project Members

* Haplogroups in green have been confirmed by SNP testing. Haplogroups in red have been predicted by Family Tree DNA based on unambiguous results in the individual's personal page. This has been placed on this GAP page for your ease and convenience. Please note that for any predicted results we see no reason for ordering a SNP test to confirm the Haplogroup. if a – is in the HAPLO field then we feel that the comparative results are not clear and unambiguous and if the kit holder wants to know their SNP with 100% confidence they may consider ordering a SNP confirmation test.
