Project Background:
This project was originally started in July 2005 with an interest in the Bennett families from Orange Co., NY, especially Jeremiah Bennett (1760-1811) and also Thaddeus Bennett, both Revolutionary War soldiers.

There was a group administrator change on September 18, 2007.

My interest is primarily in the Bennett families from Monmouth Co., NJ plus New York City and the surrounding areas. It is known that several early Monmouth County Bennett families had also lived in the New York City area.

My line is Benjamin Bennett (c1787-1871) and his wife Mary. Both were born in NJ, but they lived in Manhattan from c1812-1835, where all their children were born. By the 1840 census they were living in Monmouth Co., NJ and that is where they died. A similar pattern exists for Jeremiah Bennett (1784-1852) and his wife Sarah. Many people believe that Benjamin and Jeremiah were brothers, but there is no proof. It is commonly believed that Jeremiah Bennett (1751-1812) and his wife Mary were their parents. However, Jeremiah, Sr. had at least 3 brothers - Joseph, Thomas and Theophilus, and there is very little known about any of them.

This project was created to allow any male Bennett (or variant spelling) to have their Y-DNA tested at a group rate. This offers a significant discount over the regular price - ie. $99. vs $149. for the basic 12 marker test.

We are able to accept donations to help any male Bennett get tested who cannot afford it themselves. This is a wonderful way to participate in the project when you are not eligible to be tested yourself (ie females and non Bennett males). If you would like to donate to a particular Bennett line, please let me know and the funds will be set aside for that purpose.

Project Goals:
The first goal of this project is to collect various Bennett DNA samples. Any male Bennett (or variant spelling) is welcome to join. My personal goal is to obtain DNA from the early Bennett settlers of Monmouth Co., NJ as well as New York City and the surrounding areas.

The second goal is for good genetic markers to be established for the various Bennett lines so that current and future generations will be able to determine which line they are from. Ideally these markers will take us back across the Atlantic to either Holland, France or Great Britain, especially England. I would personally like to see and compare the DNA results for descendants of John Bennet who died before 1540 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

If you know of a male Bennett that may like to join, please send them to this site. Any female Bennett who is interested in having her Bennett Y-DNA tested will need to find a male Bennett to be tested - ie brother, father, uncle, cousin, etc. Any non Bennett male, but with a Bennett ancestor, will need to find a direct male descendant from that Bennett line to be tested. This is because the Y-DNA is passed down only from father to son.

If you are a Bennett descendant and a member of the DAR, SAR or other lineage society, an historical society, or a genealogy society, etc. please consider placing an announcement in their newsletter about this project. If you are having a reunion where many Bennetts will be attending, please consider making up a flyer. If you need help with any of the above, just let me know.

Project News:
IMPORTANT - the group administrator will be away until June 4, 2008. So, if anybody sends me an email I may not be able to answer it until after I return. Please be patient. Thank you.

There are now over 60 members in the study !

We have members with connections to:
MA, CT, NY, NJ, PA, VA, NC, SC, GA, AL, KY, TN and MO

We have members with paternal origins of:
England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and Holland

We currently have new members being tested.

Project Results:
Please consider joining so that we can further the research.

The results are kept private and group members are automatically notified when they have a match or close match (depending on how they set their user preferences). Many of the members have their results on the ysearch site. However, you need your own Bennett Y-DNA test results for comparison with the group or ysearch.

Many people have asked me why our members, their Y-DNA results, and paternal ancestor are not linked. This is because the original group members wanted that information kept private and only available to other group members. Obviously, I will honor that request for all group members.

Here is a list of the earliest documented ancestor of some of the members in our group. Upon enrolling, each member is asked to supply the name of their earliest documented Bennett ancestor, not their earliest suspected one. Many members have their suspected lines further back.

DNA Test Results (Alleles) for Project Members

* Haplogroups in green have been confirmed by SNP testing. Haplogroups in red have been predicted by Family Tree DNA based on unambiguous results in the individual's personal page. This has been placed on this GAP page for your ease and convenience. Please note that for any predicted results we see no reason for ordering a SNP test to confirm the Haplogroup. if a – is in the HAPLO field then we feel that the comparative results are not clear and unambiguous and if the kit holder wants to know their SNP with 100% confidence they may consider ordering a SNP confirmation test.
