Project Background:

While a surname itself may give us incomplete or misleading or, at best, only general information about the origin of a family, DNA-testing can give us concrete evidence for identifying and separating family lines. Y-chromosome DNA testing is especially helpful because the male Y-chromosome is handed down, father to son, unchanged through the generations, except for rare mutations which, in themselves, can be helpful indicators of branching. The accessibility and affordability of family DNA testing is doubtless the greatest technical advance in the history of genealogical research because -- at long, long last -- we have a tool to break down those brick walls! Project Goals:

The goal of the ARMSTRONG Surname Project is to distinguish between ARMSTRONG ancestral lines, worldwide. Any reasonable spelling variant is included (please feel free to suggest a variant you feel I have missed).

Please note that, at the outset, it makes sense to "cast the net widely." As the number of individuals tested increases and various lines become well defined, I will be more than happy to turn over these lines to other researchers specializing in them. I don't recommend splitting-up the project at the outset because I have a feeling we are in for some surprises with regard to where the divisions belong...

Also please note that, to participate meaningfully, you will need to share your male direct-line ancestry either in the form of a pedigree or, preferably, as family group sheets.

Project News:

08 November 2007 - Robert Armstrong of Bournemouth, England joined the project as a Co-Admin

05 June 2005 the project was expanded to include the TRAYNOR surname (and all variations)
05 Jan 2005 _ John D. Armstrong became Project Administrator.
21 Dec 2004 - the ARMSTRONG project was annouced at GenForum.
12 Dec 2004 - the first member joined the separate Armstrong Surname Project.
10 Aug 2004 - the separate ARMSTRONG Surname Project was opened.
April 2004 - The Border Reivers DNA Project was commenced, including Armstrong members.
7 April 2003 - The first Armstrongs joined the Strong FTDNA surname project.
circa 2002 - The first Armstrong DNA testing was performed.
