Background
The Zane surname is relatively uncommon. Most or all Zanes in the United States descend from Robert Zane (b. 1643, d. 1695) who immigrated to New Jersey in 1675. He left many descendents. He was a Quaker and was affiliated with William Penn. Robert Zane (b. 1643, d. 1695) was the son of Robert Zane who was baptized on 14 Oct 1618 in Yarcombe, Devonshire, England. The father of Robert Zane (bapt. 14 Oct 1618) was Simone Zane, who was baptized on 16 Dec 1584 in Yarcombe, Devonshire, England. The ancestral origins of Simone Zane are unknown. Some have claimed that he was of Danish ancestry. Others believe that his ancestors were from Venice, Italy where the Zane family was prominent in the affairs of that city.
