| Project Background: Ancestry from Eastern Slovakia/Poland border villages of the former Spis County Slovakia. Rev April 2008
The Zamagurie Region straddles the eastern Slovak and southern Poland border. Zamagurie refers to the border land area of the north western part of the former Spis County Slovakia. This area is a compact geographic and ethnographic areas defined by the natural borders of the Bialka River to the east, the Spisske Magura Mountains to the south and the Dunajec River to the north. A wonderful book entitled Zamagurze Spiskie; Spisske Zamagurie by Jan Budz and photos by Wojciech Smolak (ISBN 83-912197-0-4) describes each of the villages in Polish and Slovak. Included is a great map showing all our villages in the project. Both Mr. Budz and Smolak have authorized the use of their map for this project. Until a link is established, the villages are listed. Mr. Budz has ancestry from Czarna Gora!
The area located on the Polish border side is called Polski Spisz. These villages (using the Polish spelling) include: Jaworzyna Spiska, Jurgow, Rzepiska, Czarna Gora, Trybsz, Lapsze Wysne, Lapszanka, Lapsze Nizne, Kacwin, Nowa Biala, Krempachy, Dursztyn, Frydman, Falsztyn, Niedzica and Lys nad Dunajcem. Also included in this project are the neighboring former Galician villages of Bialka Tatrazanka and Brzgi.
The area located on the Slovak border side is called Spisske Zamagurie. These villages (using the Slovak spelling) include: Majere, Spiskka Stara Ves, Matiasovce, Spisske Hanusovce, Velka and Mala Frankova, Havka, Zalesie (formerly Gibelly), Jezersko, Rel'ov, Cerveny Klastor, Lechnica, Haligovce, Velka Lesna, Velky Lipnik, Stranany and Lesnica. Also included is the neighboring village of Wysne Ruzbachy. Please note: the village of Osturna is in an independent DNA project from the Zamagurie Region and is not included in this project.
The Group Administrator of the Zamagurie Region DNA project actively maintains a database of surnames from the villages in this geographic area. What is unique to this database is that it is more than a list of surnames. It is a compilation of researched pedigrees documenting all descendants, their spouses, children etc. through the generations. When available, parish census, Hungarian census and military records are also recorded. As of April 2008, this database contains in excess of 16,685 people represented by 2,170 + surnames (excluding variant spellings) and over 5,670 marriages! A complete list of ALL the surnames may be found under the PROJECT NEWS Section. The surnames listed above are only those that are presently being tested. With time, this list will grow. Add your name to the list by participating!
The source of vital statistics are actual church records from the ancestral villages obtained during 5 trips to the Zamagurie Region, personal research in Slovak archives, professional genealogy services paid for by the Group Administrator as well as available LDS microfilms. In many cases (especially for the Polski Spisz villages), the records are only available in the village churches or church archives and are not yet available through the LDS.
WHY WAS THIS PARTICULAR DNA PROJECT STARTED? - ON A PERSONAL NOTE!
My initial interest in genealogy was to learn who my great-grandparents were and where they were from. To go even further back in time, the direct lines and co-lateral lines were also documented building on the family relationships through the villages. By observation, one could describe who was related to whom, note patterns of birth and marriages, see the effect of catastrophes and plagues in the villages as well as the recoveries, note how marriage partners came from 'just over the mountain' or how surnames migrated or stayed for that matter in particular villages. The hobby now became a passion! Information was shared by doing 'look-ups' for others along with others that were also researching this area. It was just one way of 'giving back.'
This DNA project is the next extension of giving back. Participation by those who have shared ancestry from the Zamagurie Region serves to magnify the power of the established research. With time and participation, the combination may further other's genealogy on a new level.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Participation in this project is limited to those members who can demonstrate an ancestral link to these villages. Why? Membership in this project should have a reasonable chance of a match as the project gains more members. However, it should be clearly understood that no guarantees of a match can be made.
YOUR PARTICIPATION CAN HELP YOU AND OTHERS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THEIR SLOVAK ROOTS! HONOR YOUR ANCESTORS BY PRESERVING MORE THAN JUST A MEMORY. JOIN TODAY!
WHAT CAN PARTICIPATION DO FOR ME?
DNA testing alone can tell you if 2 people who match are related but it cannot tell you how you are related. Your work as a genealogist is not done. Your participation and results when compared with known pedigrees from the Zamagurie Region may be a guiding tool to direct your research. You may then focus your efforts in connecting to a family line that has already been documented and identify links with others researching the same area or surnames.
WHY SHOULD I JOIN THIS PARTICULAR DNA PROJECT?
DNA testing can help confirm your paper trail, help to discover links to relatives and possibly even help follow your ancestral surnames as they migrated from village to village. Your participation in THIS project taps into over 10 years of research specifically in the Zamagurie Region. The Group Administrator will assist you in establishing whether you MAY be linked to this region BEFORE you submit a sample. This may increase your potential of matching others also researching your surnames. Mind you, there are no guarantees of finding a match nor can we do your genealogy for you!
The major advantage of participating is the combined efforts of the researched pedigrees, experience of working specifically in the Zamagurie Region, familiarity of surnames and migration patterns and passion for continuing these efforts.
THE TESTING AND DATABASE CAN BE POWERFUL TOOLS TO FURTHER YOUR GENEALOGY RESEARCH!
WHY SHOULD I PARTICIPATE NOW?
As the family historian, how many times have we asked ourselves, 'why didn't I ask these questions of my relatives sooner?' or 'Why didn't I interview them while I had the chance?' DNA testing is much the same way. If a direct line "daughters out" Y-Marker DNA testing may become more difficult or impossible. Similarly, if a line "peters out", mtDNA lines may be untraceable. Take a look at your family pedigree now to identify critical people to understanding your family history on a genetic level.
Future generations of researchers looking for their ethnic roots will be aided by this project and the database by providing a concentrated link to their Slovak/Polish border roots. Our ancestors typically married within their religion, often with someone from their own village/county AND migrated following chain migration to key cities in the USA. Our project may help to identify these immigrants for viable candidates for DNA testing!
TRANSFER RESULTS FROM OTHER DNA TESTING: People who have participated in the National Geographic Genome Project may transfer their results to the Zamagurie Project! You can find out more at the FT-DNA Home webpage. FT-DNA also describes how to transfer results from other DNA testing labs.
DON'T JUST BE A FAMILY HISTORIAN; MAKE FAMILY HISTORY!
ISN'T DNA TESTING EXPENSIVE?
It can be! However, the cost can be split amongst your interested relatives to sponsor one sample for the tests and the information can be shared! This can bring the cost down.
DO I HAVE TO GIVE BLOOD?
No! The test kit includes three cotton tipped swabs that are rubbed against the inside cheek for one minute, deposited in a vial and simply mailed back to the lab for testing. We are from the Zamagurie Region NOT Transylvania!

To establish a DNA database correlating with the pedigrees generated by conventional genealogy research specifically from the Zamagurie Region. Continued efforts on both fronts will be a powerful research tool as this project grows.
To assist project participants in identifying their link to the Zamagurie Region prior to their participation in the project. By providing a 2-4 generation pedigree chart, the Group Administrator will cross check against the private database or available records. This genealogy assistance is performed free of charge in hopes that the member may participate in the Zamagurie Region Dual Geographic Project. Certain conditions and limitations apply. The Group Administrator will then work with the participant to generate a Y-Chromosome DNA Chart or mT-DNA chart and determine if a suitable DNA donor can be identified. For more information, please contact the Group Administrator.
To continue to identify key documentation for our Zamagurie Ancestors AND immigrants for the purposes of furthering our genealogy efforts!
SAMPLING PLANNED IS TAKING PLACE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE OCEAN!
Sampling is being conducted both in the United States as well as in the Zamagurie Region villages themselves. In this way, genealogists researching their ancestry may participate by personally being a member for DNA testing or sponsoring testing of their ancestral surnames if a candidate is identified. Contact the group administrator for more details.
The Zamagurie Region Project is strictly non-profit. If you are unable to participate at this time, perhaps you would consider sponsoring a DNA candidate's test kit in whole or in part. May 8, 2008 Update:
Great news! Nine of ten DNA kits sent overseas were successfully administered. I am grateful to Vlado Flak for taking on this task. Armed with the kits and pedigrees generated from our database, he had the daunting task of not only locating the prospective candidates but also in convincing those candidates to participate. It wasn't always easy! The kits are now back in the US and on their way to the lab for testing.
A special thank you to David Asplundt for sponsoring a test applied to BUDZ surname. This name has long history in the Polish Spisz Region. Both David and I share this ancestry. Another test kit was sponsored by one of our most knowledgeable participants. A male Hanescek was sampled from the village of Ruzbachy. This surname dates back to the earliest of records in this village with its' deep to be from Wallachian migration! The remainder of the kits were sponsored by the group administrator.
In addition, new candidates for overseas are being identified. I will be personally in the villages July 26 through 2 August. Now's the time to think about sponsoring candidates from YOUR family tree overseas!
FT-DNA recently updated 2008 Haplogroup designations. As a point of information, these changes did not affect any of our participants haplogroups.
April 16, 2008: Ten (10) DNA kits were sent to Slovakia for testing. The package was held up in customs because I insured it for loss. Yes, DNA kits are expensive to lose too! After a few letters back and forth, the kits were released without having to pay duty. That's good news! Also, with the weather breaking, my contact is hoping to begin to locate the identified test candidates for testing next week. The surname list will be updated in April. Keep checking back for more names! Watch for the results in four to six weeks!
Also, I am happy to say that I will be in our villages again from 26 July to 2 August, 2008. If anyone would like to sponsor a DNA test, or have a potential family member identified for testing, please contact me.
March 7, 2008:
For those of you that get the Travel Channel, you will be VERY interested in two shows coming up in March. Both are in our Zamagurie Region Project. One is on the Polish Tatra Side with a GORALE wedding in Bialka Tatrzanka!!! It provides a wonderful views of a REAL Gorale Wedding in all it's splendor and great views of the village. The next episode is on the Slovakian side. Check your TV listings! Take Care. Karen Melis (AFTERNOTE: IGNORE THE COMMENTARY - Just look at the views)
28 Feb 2008: FT-DNA has announced a promotion for those who have tested with other commercial DNA testing companies. People from Ancestry.DNA, Relative Genetics, Genebase and and others can convert their results to FT-DNA and therefor compare their results with the LARGEST database of DNA results for genealogy today. The promotion also offers upgrades from Y-12 to other marker numbers at reduced pricing. Here is the link for the form: www.familytreedna.com/PDF/PROMO_GAP.pdf
Feb 2008 Update:
Well, the kits are finally in the mail to Slovakia. This has taken much more time than I anticipated to identify actual descendants within the villages. The goal is to test some key names for our present project members as well as very common names for our project villages. We've made some preliminary contacts for those we'd like to test. Testing is planned in Bialka Tatrazanka, Kacwin, Czarna Hora, Niedzica (Polish Spisz)and Wysne Ruzbachy (Slovak Spis). I've sent additional tests for as yet unidentified people. As the test kits are in transit, I hope to make additional contacts for key names on the Slovak side as well. So now, we will need to be patient with the weather, catching up with candidates and of course the schedule of the person administering the tests. Two tests will be sponsored by two members or our group members! I will acknowledge these generous people as the test results come in. I am sponsoring the balance of the tests.
I submitted for a grant proposal from Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak's "Honoring Our Ancestor" website. I am a previous grant winner (Thank you again Megan). The basic premise of the intended project is to focus on preserving our immigrant ancestral documents and DNA! With each passing generation, if these are lost, future generations will find it even more difficult to search their Zamagurie roots and be less efficient at finding an appropriate DNA candidate. Wish 'us" luck!
As the Osturna Group is within our Zamagurie region, I would be very curious how their results compare to our own!

18 Nov 2007 Update: Please note, we added a counter to the website to see how our 'advertising' is coming along. Don't forget about the gift certificate price reduction offered by FT-DNA. This is a perfect way to get a "family" a group gift for those who have everything AND do it at a reduced price. Happy Thanksgiving!
15 November 2007 Update:
I've just taken advantage of FT-DNA's promotion for $$$ off various test kits. If you are still interested, remember you only have until December 31 to order the kit.
Personally, I've ordered 6 test kits which will be shipped overseas. I have identified 3 people for testing. We will be searching for appropriate people to test with the other kits. MORE ON THIS LATER!
PITTSBURGH SLOVAK HERITAGE FESTIVAL OUTCOME: The booth at the Pittsburgh Slovak Heritage festival went well. We had quite a bit of activity. Almost all of the 100 flyers were taken explaining the project etc. We had at least 4 new people who were immediately identifed in the database and expressed an interest in participating. However, the proof is in the test ordering!
I also 'raffled' off a free Y-12 DNA test kit to anyone who could demonstrate a link to the Zamagurie area. Conditions applied: You had to attend the festival, we have to confirm your pedigree links to the area (to benefit both the project and the participant) and you had to be willing to release your results. I am still following up on the potential winner which will be announced after I give some time for others to return their entries! This was my 'hook' to get people to the booth.
29 October 2007 Update:
The 2007 University of Pittsburgh Annual Slovak Heritage festival will be on 4 November. In support, I placed an advertisement in the official program regarding our Zamagurie Region Project. Then a fact struck me. An estimated 20% of our ancestors from the Zamagurie Region emigrated to PITTSBURGH. This project needs participation to continue to grow. So, I have now committed to doing a formal display at the festival in hopes of gaining more participants. Last year's attendance was over 800 people! Wish "US" luck.
16 October 2007 Update:
We would like to thank the JEDNOTA for running a brief article on our Zamagurie DNA Project in their 19 September 2007 newspaper. You can see this article on line in their newspaper archives.
Also, in support of the University of Pittsburgh's Slovak Heritage Festival slated for 4 November 2007, another advertisement of our project will be included in the program. It reads:
Congratulations to the 2007 Slovak Heritage Festival in preserving the rich, cultural heritage of our Slovak Ancestors!
Many Pittsburgh Slovaks came from the former Spis County Slovak / Polish border villages known as the Zamagurie Region. If you share this ancestry, you will be interested in our new Zamagurie Region Dual Geographic DNA Project!
Our ancestors preserved a way within each of us to discover more about our deep ancestral roots. This project combines over 10 years of traditional genealogy in the Zamagurie Region with today’s technology. Our goals are simple: to uncover relationships between our Slovak ancestors, locate genetic cousins, study migration patterns from village to village and to learn more about our deep Slovak ancestry!
For a list of the villages and surnames being studied, please see our website:

10 August 2007 Update:
Once again, we welcome three new members to the group. Thank you! We are starting to see our nice flow of results coming in, new members being added and increased 'advertising' of the project. Our site is now posted on Rootsweb.com, Genealogy.com (Cambria County, Luzern County, Northampton Countyand Northumberland County Pennsylvania Message boards. Many of our Spis ancestors came to Eastern Pennsylvania to the coal mines, silk and woolen mills. Our Western Pennsylvanian Ancestors came to work in the Glass factories,Steel Mills and Rail Roads among other occupations. If you can think of other sites to get the word out, please feel free to drop me an email.
Also, if you would like to see anything added to the website, please let me know. I am very open to making this project OUR project and welcome your input.
28 July 2007 Update:
New Format! Each revision will include a date and the latest project update. By scrolling down, the reader will be able to see the project history, results and additions going in back in time. Updates will be provided frequently!
A new section of a complete list of surnames documented in the administrator's database is now provided. This may entice others with common ancestral names and ancestral villages to join our project. Also, I will provide an update with each revision on the current number of individuals, surnames and marriages in the actively maintained database. This represents 10 + years of work and goes back 14 generations in time! The goal is to demonstrate a continuous growth of our project on multiple levels. These sections will always be provided first so as not to be buried in the past.
July 3, 2007 Update:
* Membership is growing. We now have our 15th member testing both Y and maternal DNA.
* Our results are showing the value of sound traditional genealogy and DNA testing. We have confirmed a connection genetically from a PISARCIK descendant from the village of Velka Frankova, Spis County Slovakia to one that has roots in Frydman, Spisz County Poland.
* New members results will also prove/disprove LOPATA cousins from New Jersey and Matiasovce Slovakia.
* Advertising! We're trying to get the word out! In addition to the articles at the TARG (Tatra Area Research Group) and in the summer 2007 issue of 'Slovakia' (Vol 21 #2), I've been contacting Slovak genealogy websites, historical societies and fraternal organizations. Did you know that the Catholic Sokols were founded by a group of men from the Spisz Region?
* The Earliest Known Ancestor will now be used on the Y-Chart and mT-DNA charts. Since our project goal is to link members with common ancestry from the Zamagurie Region, it seems most appropriate to use the earliest known ancestor's name, approximate DOB and village of origin instead of the person who tested. This approach links the surnames represented by the DNA testing and pedigrees found in the traditional genealogy database. I've updated most members information and village coordinates. If you have any corrections, please let me know.
* The Zamagurie Region Public website has been updated to show the Earliest Known Ancestor's village of origin when the Y or mt-DNA maps are generated. I have converted all the Zamagurie Region villages within the project scope to decimal format if anyone needs them.
* Use of the Earliest Known Ancestor's name will also reserve the decision to each member to post a pedigree on their personal page or not.
* Our members might be interested in the following book which describes the history of Eastern Europe. It is really a great resource for this project: The Palgrave Concise Historical Atlas of Eastern Europe by Dennis P. Hupchick and Harold E. Cox. ISBN 0-312-23985-8. Paperback
* The traditional genealogy database continues to grow. I will provide updated numbers with each revision to to this website. I try to work this daily! As of 5 July , we have 13,095 people documented, over 1750 + surnames (variants excluded) and 4,390 marriages recorded. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd. Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project Results: Rev 12: 16 April 2008: We have new results in both our Y and mt-DNA groups. Also, two new candidates have been tested and results are pending.
Rev 11: Feb 23, 2008:
With each new posted result, our participants become curious as to what the results actually mean. FT-DNA provides each of us a description on the haplogroup on our personal web pages in the results section. They also provide a FAQ section to assist us in answering questions like what a match means etc.
This information is limited for those of us who crave more.
I strongly encourage our members to participate in the National Geographic Genome Project. There is a $15.00 charge for this for each result entered. One can submit both Y and mt-DNA results and get better explanations, charts, graphs and certificates about your specific results.
There is a new site by the amazing Steve Morse (famous for creating one step search engines) who has now added a Genetic DNA capability. He provides search capability for FT-DNA database results, ysearch.org results and explanations on the various haplotypes etc. Check it out!

Rev 10: Feb 2008.
We now have another Y-37 kit assigned to the FRANKOVIC surname from the village of Nowa Biala, Polish Spisz. As this is one of my own lines, I am anxious to see the results in 6-8 weeks!
We will all have to be patient as we await the kits return from Slovakia. Additional sampling may be possible if a planned trip to Slovakia this summer materializes! I still have gift certificates available if anyone is looking to test/sponsor at reduced rates. These come as a thank you from FT-DNA. You'll note them as available gift certificates on the public web page. If you are interested in sponsoring a candidate overseas, please contact me.
Rev 9: January 2008
The outstanding results for our members are all in. We've had quite a wide variety of haplogroups being identified for such a small region!
Presently, the Group Administrator is working on identifying 10-12 potential candidates and personally sponsoring testing overseas in the Zamagurie Region. You will see these as unassigned kit numbers on the public website (Zamagurie Project, Vodzak and Lopata Surname Projects). Cost of testing is well out of reach for most of these candidates. Sponsorship of these tests are deeply rooted in the concept that many descendants from our ancestors remained in the villages. In general, they married people who share long histories from the Zamagurie region.
Critical to the project is this simple fact. Our potential overseas candidates mirror our immigrant ancestors who came to key cities in the USA via chain migration, who similarly married typically within their religion, with people from their region, ethnic background, village and/or counties. By testing both male and female candidates from our region overseas, we add significant information to our project for the benefit of our project members. This effort is quite time consuming. I had hoped to have it in progress in January. However, I believe the time and effort will provide more bang for the buck in testing!
If you are interested in sponsoring a candidate overseas, please contact me.
Rev 8: Test results are being distributed to those participants who ordered through the Group Administrator. Thank you for your patience as I try to provide a little more information as to the meaning of your results stated from FT-DNA.
Rev: 7 November 2007
We now have ALL our outstanding test results in. Please see the Y-Chart and mt-DNA charts for comparisons. I will start posting some of the interpretations over the next few weeks.
Rev: October 2007
Currently we have 18 members and several new inquiries. Both Y tests (males) and mt-DNA tests have been completed or test results are pending. Please check back frequently! We are finding matches as expected for people who have shared ancestry. The intent for this testing is to establish a baseline before testing additional common surname branches. Of course we hope to find more matches as general membership grows.
We have quite a wide variety of haplogroup designations. members! This is especially interesting given our Zamagurie Area encompasses an approximate 25 miles radius! I am trying to gain an understanding of each of the determined haplogroups and early Slav migration in hopes of melding both the technology and history together. general Special thanks to member Jim Honeychuck who has shared his experience with the interpretation of the haplogroups and their potential migration routes.
Interestingly, we do find some odd Y-25 Marker and Y-37 marker matches when opened up to the entire FT-DNA database. FT-DNA interprets this simply as "...having a common ancestor many, many, many generations ago." If you get an email indicating this, it doesn't hurt to follow up with that person. Also, if you have questions that aren't answered in the FAQ's section of FT-DNA you can always email them and request an explanation of the results. They have been very responsive.
FT-DNA Members may also participate in the National Geographic Genome Project by transferring their results. You can find out more about this project on your personal page. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd.
