Welcome to the South African mtDNA FTDNA Project Group. If you want a mtDNA test or have already had a mtDNA test, and if you or one of your female ancestors were born in Southern Africa, then you are welcome to join.
The project was started in September 2008. Results are classified by region, as can be found here, for example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haplogroup

I also recommend the books "Trace your roots with DNA" by Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak and Ann Taylor; and books by Spencer Wells and/or Bryan Sykes (particularly "Seven Daughters Of Eve").
