Smeds Surname Project- Background
Administrators
Background
Although when I began this project, my personal focus is on determining the connections between those who bear the farmname/surname Smeds, Smedts, or other variants of these two Swede-Finn/Swedish/Scandinavian surnames, for important reasons, this project has taken a broader view.
'Farmnames' can mean that related people who moved, or married, disconnect from one another, over time. Such farmnames can 'hide' real family relationships.
To expand this project, it has been moved beyond testing only Smeds people. If you believe that your father's family has a connection to the Österbotten/Ostrobothnian region of Finland— and especially any connection to the area around Närpes Finland—you are invited to participate in this project.
The original members of the project have all taken the 37-marker Y-DNA test.
To join this project, it is necessary to take at least the 25 marker test. The 25-marker DNA test can easily be upgraded to 37-markers later on, for an additional fee--without any need to take an additional test.
For men who have already been tested for The Genographic Project, we welcome you to join our project. However, it is necessary that you first upgrade your test to at least 25-markers, before making a request to join this project.
If you have questions about the this Project, send an e-mail with the heading:

IMPORTANT: If you copy this e-mail adddress, to paste it in to your e-mail message address box, it will be necessary to remove the parentheses-- '( )' --on either side of the '@' symbol, before you can send mail to me. By adding the '( )' to the '@' I am purposely not creating a working link, in order to limit the amount of unwanted mail I receive.
Note: Again, to be certain of an e-mail response from me, use the e-mail title:
