Project Background:
Founded in Sept., 2005, this project has been established to study the genetic heritage of Sicily, which has been a crossroads of civilization for almost 3000 years of recorded history. DNA testing, both yDNA for paternal lines and mtDNA for maternal lines, can provide a picture of the deep and recent ethnic background of Sicilians and their descendants. This includes Greek, Italian, Arab, Sephardic Jewish, Norman and Spanish backgrounds, among others. An added bonus, as more join and the database grows, is the possibility of finding common ancestors in the more recent period. This would allow family researchers to connect with distant cousins more quickly and collaborate more effectively in their research in the records.


Project Goals:
The Sicily project has two main goals.

One is to investigate the ethnic and genetic diversity of Sicily as shown through the DNA of the descendants of those born in Sicily. In most cases project members are the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Sicilians. But, through the genetic story told in their yDNA and mtDNA, we can discover the heritage of Sicilians over the centuries. We hope that some of what we learn through the results of this project can contribute to the knowledge of human migrations being studied by population geneticists.

The second goal, especially as we recruit more members, is to actually establish connections - a common ancestor - between some members. Genetic genealogy is a new tool in genealogy research that can supplement and help make breakthroughs in traditional records-based research. Once that common ancestor has been discovered, then much more productive research in the records can help fill out family trees.


Project News:
How to Join the Sicily Project

Current Family Tree DNA Customers: Go to your Family Tree DNA personal page and click on the blue icon labelled "Join" (This is in the left hand column, below your name and kit number.) This will bring you to a page with the title "Group Join." Scroll down this page and look for the section titled "Dual Geographic Projects." Next, click on the letter "S" in that section, which sends you to another page. On that page click on "Sicily" which sends you, finally, to the page where you can scroll down and click on the "Join" button, near the bottom.

National Geographic's Genographic Project members: Any one who has been tested by the Genographic Project can upload their results for free to Family Tree DNA and then join projects. To upload your results to Family Tree DNA, go to your Genographic Project "Results" page. At the bottom of that page it says "To learn more about your family history..." Click on that and follow the steps and your results will be added to Family Tree DNA's database. Then use the instructions above (for Current Family Tree DNA Customers), to join the Sicily Project. (Family Tree DNA customers may also upload their results to the Genographic Project. This will allow you to include your results in the five year international study. There is a $15 charge to upload either your yDNA or mtDNA results to the Genographic Project. Look for the "Genographic Project" tab on your Family Tree DNA personal page to upload your results.)

Not with Family Tree DNA or Genographic Project: Just click on the link labelled "Join this Project" in the upper left hand corner of this page. This will send you to a page where you can fill out the form to join and order a test kit. A basic 12 marker yDNA test costs $99; the 25 marker test costs $148; the 37 marker test costs $189; the 67 marker test costs $269. (These prices include a discount for joining the project.) There is a pulldown menu at the bottom of the form with all the test options (including mtDNA tests) and prices.

Project Results:
May 2, 2008:

We now have 294 members - 227 men and 67 women. We have yDNA results for 204 of the men. (Eight kits do not have test results yet and fifteen male member's paternal lines are not Sicilian or they're not testing their yDNA.) We also have mtDNA results for 117 project members.

As you can see, thirty of our members have full 67 marker results and fifty-eight have 37 marker results. Also, 106 members have gotten an SNP test to verify their haplogroup.

For those without SNP verification, there is also a listing of the prediction given by Whit Athey's haplogroup predictor, which is listed in the links section above. (With Whit Athey's predictor, first round scores above 50 indicate a good fit.
