General Overview of Shannon Group Results:

The family name SHANNON has separate origins in both Ireland and Scotland. Many unrelated families with different original Celtic names were anglicized as Shannon. This is reflected in the DNA results which show Shannon families with Y-Chromosomes unrelated to one another over historic times.

We are polling resources to identify families and will post those results here as available. As of 9/17/2011 there are 71 members of the Shannon group. Eight members are not in the YDNA Shannon data pool (KITS 27500, 27501, 28923,122969,126858,139909, N59994 and N74962), being related only by marriage, being female, or having their Shannon connection in a maternal family line. There are also six members (KITS 2989,205721,47928,200263 N43012 and N97829 ) who have joined who are not members of Shannon families but who clearly fit within the group haplotype. Of the 13 unassigned individuals of the Shannon data pool, some may be distantly related but likely more than 300 years ago. However, since the sampling set is still so small, this does not mean that they are not members of large Shannon families.

Unfortunately, the current sample set primarily represents those who migrated from their ancestral homes to far flung regions of the world. Very few Shannons remaining in Ireland and Scotland have joined. Therefore, it could well be that the ungrouped members are simply the early representatives of much larger Shannons families who did not migrate in large numbers. It is simply too early to tell. Anyone who has contact with Shannons who still live in Ireland and Scotland, or who live elsewhere but can establish a line of descent back to their ancestral homes, are encouraged to try to get them to join this group. The more who join the clearer the picture becomes. Being able to connect with original families remaining in or near their ancestral home areas would be a huge accomplishment for this group.

We have two unrelated Shannon-Shanahan matches. KIT 27499 and KIT 75766 where there is an additional Shannon match but that Kit is not part of this group. We also have a 24 of 25 match of a Shanahan-Shannon KIT 11589-25 markers with KIT 142971-37 markers.



Australian Not Determined group

Based on genealogy, KIT 130525 is assigned as the Nathaniel group. We have the exciting possibility that the Nathanial Shannon group is related to some Australian Shannons. Currently a 35 of 37 match we await further testing on 130525 to show the closeness of the relationship. We have recently received another match with this group, 124726 is a 33 of 37 match with the Australian. The oral history for the Australian member is that there is a connection to New England.

We have a question here that requires more testing and participants if possible. Both 107743 and 128549 believed that they were descended from Thomas/Eigness of Virginia.
However 107743 had failed to match other members of that group and now 128549 is a 35 of 37 match with 107743 indicating likelihood of common ancestor.
Until more information is available, we do not know that they are part of the Thomas/Eigness group since there is clearly no match to the others of that group in our pool. However,
this group also shows a possible connection to the Nathaniel group. The difference in the modals between the two groups is seven only markers.

130525 is an 11 of 12 match with the above two group members but 130525 believes via genealogy that they are descended from Nathanial Shannon.
But further testing shows the relationship to presumably be very distant 31 of 37 markers.
However more participants in this group are needed as they may each be within 3 markers of the core group. No current relationship is shown.
We have what appears to be a match of Australian Shannon’s with the line of Nathaniel of Boston.
Further testing results for 130525 will show if the relationship (currently 35 of 37 will continue to be close and this will help us with the definition of
relationship to 107743 and 128549. We have an additonal potential match with 124726 who matches the Australian Shannon at 33 of 37 markers.

The first five kits can all be associated, with varying degrees of certainty, with the descendents of Thomas/Eleanor Shannon of Virgina and Georgia. Many genealogies have this family descendent from the Thomas/Eigness line due to similarity in names and geographical proximity. The DNA results have finally established that this is not the case. Thomas/Eleanor appear to have migrated from Ireland circa 1767 and settled for a time in Pittsylvania County VA, and than moved to Wilkes County, GA in 1773. Their descendents moved westward across the deep South over the course of the 19th century. Thomas Shannon (born c.1735 ) and Eleanor had three sons, Thomas, John and Owen along with at least two daughters. Nothing is known of Thomas Jr. John moved to South Carolina and had several sons, he died in 1815. Owen moved to Texas and had a large family. John's sons moved west also but only two, Moses and Aaron, can be accounted for in the records for genealogical purposes. KIT 2989 and KIT 112297 and KIT 197182 believe themselves to be descendants of John but can not unequivocally prove the connection with actual documentation. KIT 154822 can document descent from Owen Shannon, which helps support the conclusion that all of these closely matched individuals are descend from Thomas/Eleanor.

This result was discovered when a member of the Bryant family submitted her distant cousin's DNA for analysis. The Bryant family and its connections were in close proximity to the Shannons for several decades from approximately the 1780-1830 time frame in Pittsylvania County, VA. to Wilkes and finally Franklin County GA. Nature of the relationship is uncertain. Probably an illigitimacy, but could also be an adoption as several Shannon males vanish from the records during this time period. There were also other Shannons of unknown origin near these same locations who might have been related.

"By way of background, I have a lot of autosomal matches with a Shannon family that came out of New Ross, Wexford, IRE and settled in Newfoundland around 1811. The patriarch of the family was John Shannon, b. 21 Jun 1782 in New Ross. Similarly, I have a number of matches with a Shannon family that came out of Dunbrody, Wexford, IRE about 1822 and settled in the Jacquet River area of New Brunswick. This Jacquet River family was headed by Michael Shannon c. 1798. I have John’s parents as being John Shannon (1765, Wexford) and Mary Gibbon (1761 -). Michael’s parents were Patrick Shannon (1777, Dunbrody, Wexford) and Mary Foran (1778, Wexford) . I’m guessing that based on the relative weakness of the autosomal matches that the above John and Patrick were closely related, perhaps brothers. This would explain how I am matched to a Shannon family in Newfoundland as well as New Brunswick. Most of my father’s Distant Cousins are related to these Shannons at about the 42 CM level, which would put the common ancestor back about the mid 1700, and in this case, Ireland. On the Y-DNA side, my closest match is Brian Shannon at 5 steps at 111-markers. Again, this puts the common ancestor likely back to Ireland, mid -1700s. My haplogroup is > R-FT35791, which puts my in a large group of Ryans coming out of Tipperary. In short, I know that I’m related to a family of Shannons coming out of Co. Wexford, but I can’t seem to make the connection TO the family."
