The project welcomes individuals who have an unbroken Scottish lineage on their direct paternal (yDNA) or maternal (mtDNA) line of descent.
For example - father > grandfather > great-grandfather > great-great-grandfather or mother > grandmother > great-grandmother > great-great-grandmother etc.
The project was originally established in October 2001 as the Scottish Clans DNA Project, but is now administered by the Genealogical Studies team at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland. The project merged with the Scotland DNA Project in 2012.
For surname research we recommend the 37 Y-DNA marker test as a good entry level product and the minimum useful for genealogical matching. The test can be upgraded to 67 markers at any time. This test can only be taken by males.
The Scottish DNA Project has no connection with the company called Scotlandsdna / Britainsdna who only test 'deep ancestry' markers and do not test markers useful within a genealogical time frame.
Deep ancestry testing
If you are interested in 'deep ancestry' whether it is male or female origins, we would presently recommend the National Genographic Project Test results from the National Genographic Project can be transferred into the Family Tree DNA database (and attached to your kit number if you have already tested with FTDNA). Geno 2 costs approximately £124 ($199.95).
The Geno 2 kit tests 12,316 Y-Chromosome SNPs and 3,352 mtDNA SNPs mitochondrial SNPs.

Your join request will receive an acknowledgement from FTDNA that the process is complete and in due course you will receive a welcome message from the project administrator.
Third Party upload deal from Family Tree DNA
If you tested with another company for STR markers you may now transfer your Y-DNA results if they used the Sorenson 33 or 46-marker test. This includes results from Ancestry.com, GeneTree, and Sorenson's SMGF.
(If you have deep ancestry results from Scotlandsdna and would like to contribute them to the Scottish DNA Project for research purposes, then please email them to firstname.lastname@example.org Your results cannot unfortunately be integrated with our public database).
Third Party upload deal from Family Tree DNA is available here:
