Project Background:

Our goal is discovery of all Riggs or Rigg families and their origins in England (or elsewhere). Five distinct lines have been identified so far. Some thought to be different families have proved not to be. We now have 50 members. We need more English members, please.

The group administrator will donate $20 toward each new member's first kit. Further financial aid might be available in certain circumstances. If you intend to invoke the $20 donation, please email me before you place your order and tell me your intention to use the donation so that I can know where to apply the gift and inform FamilyTreeDNA.

Joining requires that you order a test kit from FamilyTreeDNA. There is a group discount rate that applies when you join through this group (in addition to the the GA's initial contribution, if any). All transactions are between FamilyTreeDNA and the member. The study group shares only in the YDNA matching information that results from the test (a list of numbers).

Project News:

18 Mar 2007: We now know the DNA signature of Edward Riggs, the immigrant to MA of 1633. This has been published in an article in the summer 2005 issue of New England Ancestors, a publication of NEHGS. 37-marker tests have strongly indicated that Bethuel Riggs, and Silas and James Riggs, Bethuel's putative brothers, are indeed Edwardian, as family legend has it. We now have four Riggs males at 25 markers and one at 37 markers who are definitely not Edwardian, and who do not match one another either. Three known descendants of Thomas Riggs of Gloucester MA (1653) have been tested at 37 markers to establish the signature of that well-known Riggs family in America. It is Edwardian too, much to everyone's surprise. The Edwardian signature has now been established at 67 markers.So has the Thomasian signature (which differs by 2 from the 67-marker signature for Edwardians).

Project Results:

Several distinct Riggs family groups have been identified so far, one being that of Edward Riggs of Roxbury (as strongly indicated by 37-marker and 67-marker matches). Thomas Riggs of Gloucester, Mass. has been shown to be of the same genetic family as Edward of Roxbury. There have been several other lines detected which are not related to Edward of Roxbury or Thomas of Gloucester. A Rigg has been shown identical genetically to a Riggs.
